New Should have been caught in pre-flight walk around
Even airline pilots (at least the ones I know) at least do a walk around visual inspection. Pitot tubes and static ports are key elements in even a quickie check.

New Re: Should have been caught in pre-flight walk around
Apparently the tech used a silvery tape that was practically invisible at night - and that 757 wing is way up off the ground, 17 ft or so. The tape is supposed to be reflectorized so that it stands out at night.

I can't believe the pilots allowed themselves to be so fooled - the contradictory data should have told them to turn the damn computer off and fly manually.

Oddly, the one thing that was working was ground proximity, and they ignored it.
