New You forgot the biggest ingredient
Add overaggressive drivers who are not equipped mentally or physically to drive in snow. Mix in a city which doesn't have sufficient resources to deal with snow.

I pity you. But note that the initial physical conditions would not be dangerous in a better prepared part of the country.

Cheers,
Ben

Well they have been out all night but they couldn't start salting until the rain stopped. I don't know how equipped St. Louis is to deal with this, but we have known about it for hours and they seemed prepared to me. It's the drivers who are not slowing down and not realizing they need to, I think, that are causing the biggest headaches.

I have a Dr. appt tomorrow I really need to get to, but if my car won't come out of the garage, I might not... guess we'll see. John is gonna try and salt or shovel it, but it's a sheet of ice, so it might not come up easily, if at all. And I have a rear-wheel drive car, plus have to back out, so if I can't get any traction, I don't come out of the garage! ;)

New Hot Chocolate Time!
Nah, that's ok Boxley. John and I just finished shoveling and "salting" the driveway. The ice isn't that thick, which is lucky, and the deicer we sprinkled on it is melting it pretty fast.

Of course it still might sleet a bit more tonight, but the worst is off the driveway so hopefully I can get the car out. Might "salt" again right before bed if enough stuff comes down.

Anyway... it's Hot Chocolate Time!!!

Ross, I hope you don't have to go anywhere in this stuff, it's treacherous to walk on, even with deicer.

New Re: You forgot the biggest ingredient
I don't think Evel Knievel could drive on this stuff. You can't even walk on it. We get a fair amount of snow on average so there are trucks that handle most snow situations - when the snow trucks are crashing one is advised to stay home.

The worst thing of all is lots of sleet with the ground temperature well below freezing. It's like walking on marbles.

New That is bad stuff - I've seen it
But it was more dangerous in Victoria than New Hampshire.

Better prepared local population. Better prepared city.

(Incidentally not all "snow trucks" are created equal.)

Cheers,
Ben

New Re: That is bad stuff - I've seen it
At my previous job we handled the plows for the MODOT trucks - these are BIG trucks with 400hp engines and 15 foot blades, and cavernous sand bins - basically a large dump truck with a massive plow. This is the slickest stuff I've ever seen. There isn't enough material to bite into, and what is there is just absolutely slick. I haven't seen a car on my street in hours.
