New India update
I had posted earlier about the Indians examining my group's processes as prelude to moving the support function offshore. Well.....

I now hear the company is firing off several IT staff in different areas and consolidating the work here at my location. So now, in addition to the phone support, we will be providing security patch distribution, desktop/laptop system image builds and management, software update distribution, Blackberry ordering/setup and administration, Exchange administration, W2K domain administration and (this is the freakish kicker) training on use of productivity software.

We, of course, have still not heard an official yes or no on if our jobs are going to India. It kind of looks like they won't.

I'm guessing my job is secure. You never know when the clueless suits get on cost saving tear though.

New look around someone has to physically touch hardware
sooner or later, make sure you are in that group.
thanx,
bill
same old crap, con artists ripping off fools. Ah, hell, Catholic Church it start off that way. They All do. Jesus probably had three walnut shells one pea, then he's dead and can't be questioned,

New Unless they use a robot for that
one that can push buttons, hit keys, and move a mouse. :)

New In the long run the robot is cheaper
the robot won't join a union, ask for benefits, ask for days off, demand a high salary, or need unemployment insurance, etc. After X days or months the robot will have paid for itself by replacing a person. The robot can be remote operated by someone in India to hardware reset the machines when they go wonky.

So the real money would be in robot repair, if they didn't hire an H1B Visa worker from India for that. ;)

New Business doesn't operate in the long run. This quarter only
Maybe next quarter, but that's looking ahead...
New If that is the case
pay a H1b Visa Worker $5.50/hr to keep the machines running and reset or restart them when needed. :)

New Ancient technology
The original programmable controller was a slave. Machines made them too expensive. Now cheap people make the machines too expensive.

And everything new is old again...
New Hugely depthful, that..
New Fingers crossed for ya.
New Guess it's SOP to feed Uncertainty
but it seems like a lovely way to galvanize a thought in the back of everyone's mind: bail this chicken outfit when the first new Opportunity Knocks.

Vengeance is a dish which should be eaten cold
(but do French Cies forget this, too?)

Luck..
New It's interesting to watch Corp-think evolve
All the added duties are things we once did before the Corp swallowed us. After the initial shakedown, they consolidated helpdesk here and consolidated the other tasks into various of our other locales. Now that the folks at those locations have a couple/three years of expertise built up and our skills are rusty....

Then, of course, we will get to reassign some people from our location who *were* going to be fired to help with the workload. System imaging, for example, will need 2 people minimum.
