Server is "conference.iwethey.org"
Room is "ziwt"

See ya there!

New Re: Hey, Dan Reck!
Okay. I'm going to stay chatty from about 9:00 to 5:30 P.M. EST. I need to find someone more savy with IRC to set up the preferences you sent me for your server. I'm using iChat on Panther...

Dan
Just a few thoughts,

Danno
New Bah! My instructions suck!
Here's the deal (and another open invitation to join us; watching Mike misconfigure his email server is becoming something of a soap opera that you shouldn't really miss):

Jabber server: iwethey.org

When you configure your client to join a group chat (a "conference", in Jabber terminology) you need to enter "conference.iwethey.org" as the conference server, "ziwt" as the room, and anything you like as your name (doesn't have to be the same as your Jabber login).

A point to note is that Jabber lets you log in to the same server multiple times; the mechanism for doing this is by specifying a different "presence" for each login; for example, "Home" and "Work".

Jabber client recommendations include [link|http://exodus.jabberstudio.org/|Exodus] for Windows, [link|http://gabber.sourceforge.net/|Gabber] (check out [link|http://gabber.jabberstudio.org/|Gabber2], coming to OS X too!) or [link|http://gaim.sourceforge.net/|GAIM] for Linux, and [link|http://www.jabber.org/user/clientlist.php?Platform=Mac|Psi] for OS X.

C'mon and join in! Laugh, as Greg accidentally deletes the wrong LVM volume! Thrill, as you realize that CRC is really just a big softy! Be amazed, as Scott listens to tunes you've never heard of! Wonder, as I continue my adventures in configuring Exim! It's a non-stop rollercoaster ride of excitement!

New Thanx!
That should answer [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=135112|this post] nicely (although I see that imric already did...)

But...downloading and installing Exodus fails if you try to install the SSL libraries (in W2K, anyway)

Now...Exodus installed...w/o ssl, w/o any plug-ins (as they do not want to load, either). Connections fail. Here is what my profile is set up as:

Username: jb4
Server: iwethey.org
Resource: Work
Password: ********

Save Password <checked>

Sorry Peter, but there doesn't seem to be a place to specify conference.iwethey.org or ziwt.

Any hints?

I haven't seen your user get created. Try again; if you still can't work it out, ping me on AIM: "The Cargo Cult" or MSN: peter_whysall@msn.com

New "Join a Chat Room" not an option!
At least not until I get signed on, and that's the point that's failing.

Exodus | Sign On/Off<enter>

Gives Profile dialog. Choose Default Profile (which is actially the only selection)...Hit OK

"Trying to Connect" (spinney globe).......Disconnected...Reconnect in n seconds (value tends to change from try to try)
Rinse.
Repeat.

(At some point, Exodus stops repeating the futile exercise.)

OK, so I'm on the other end of a proxy. There is a CGI script that configures the proxy for both Insecure Exposer and Mozilla (and, miraculously, the same script works on both browsers!) In the Proxy tab, I have a Type: box with the cryptic choices: None, Version 4, Version 4a, Version 5 and HTTP. Doesn't look like there's a place for my cgi script anywhere...

So how would chatzilla work here...?

New Ah, it's prolly the proxy
If you can't get through on port (mumble, think it's 5222), you're prolly screwed.

Can you do, in a command window, "telnet iwethey.org 5222", press a bunch of keys and hit ENTER, and get "<stream:error>Invalid XML</stream:error>" in return?

New From the C:> prompt...
Enter "telnet iwethey.org 5222"

Get back Connecting To iwethey.org...<pregnant pause>Could not open a connection to host on port 5222 : Connect failed

Try on Moz: "[link|telnet://iwethey.org:5222|telnet://iwethey.org:5222]"
Opens Hyperterm(!)...<pregnant pause again>get message box: Unable to connect to iwethey.org on port 5222....OK (of COURSE it's not OK, but Micros~1 doesn't give you a "Not Fucking OK" button!)

Will try at home on my dial-up connection...

In the meantime...would/does chatzilla work?

New Chatzilla can't help, sorry.
It's an IRC client, not a Jabber client.

New I'm not having much luck...
I have a few IRC'ers who told me that I needed X-Chat for IRC... I installed it and I keep getting connection refused messages... I checked my firewall, etc. Do you have to create an account for me? I have been trying to enter with the name danreck...

Dan

New Seconded.
I use psi on winders from work, and stuck with it. I've tried all the other free ones that I could find. It runs on Linux (with Qt), Winders, and OS X.
