New Who should run Afghanistan?
A thread dedicated to discussion of what to do with that benighted land once we've gotten rid of the Taliban. May have nearing on how we fight the war now, so let's start hashing it out.

My idea for the short-to-medium term: let the Northern Alliance have what they can take. Invite Pakistan to take some. Invite Uzbekistan to take some. Whatever's left unclaimed, we graciously give to the United Nations. Afghanistan ceases to exist as a political entity, or even a definable geopolitical region. Conquer and divide.

In all cases, we insist on the right to hunt and arrest suspected terrorists in the territory, and kill them if they resist arrest. This is not negotiable. Whoever dare say no, they don't get the territory. If they later renege, we do it anyway, but in a discreet manner. Remember, the whole point is to wipe out al Qaeda, the Taliban and any other such organizations. Regard them as one would an infestation of termites or a plague epidemic.

After the UN peacekeepers fail miserably trying to manage what they've got, we offer to take it off their hands.

Long term, we need to think imperialism. Go in there and forcibly change their society. That's going to tick off the planet, and probably cause another big war, so we'd best wait for a suitable provocation. There's a remote hope that the attack will never come, and we can avoid all that nastiness. But let's not count on it.

Sometimes "tolerance" is just a word for not dealing with things.

New Surprising as it sounds, I agree with you
Your natural list to starboard would look to them as positively "librul" (to use a phrase), and you might even bring a sorely lacking sense of humor to the region.

Where do I vote? (I assume that would still be allowed, wouldn't it?)

New Re: Who should run Afghanistan?
What I would like to see is all of Afghanistan being turned into a UN controlled region for a period of a decade or so. That would give time for us to track down and kill those that need it, and give the UN enough time to build up some basic services. Then we can let them hold elections to form a new government for Afghanistan, at first just electing local leaders but moving up the chain steadily so that a decade after that the UN could return rule to a democratically elected government.

The problems I see with this are many though. First, if the Northern Alliance becomes too powerful then the only practical choice may be to turn power over to them. Unfortunaly this will probably result in another Somalia, where the country is ruled by a hoard of little local warlords. Second, one of Afghanistan's neighboring countries may decide they want a chunk of land as payment for their troubles. This would create a situation where the war is liable to never end as the Taliban would gain a groundswell of local support that they don't have now. Third, the US may decide to occupy Afghanistan and install a government of our choice. This will be wrapped in terms of what I said above, but the end result would very likely be a corporate client state. And finally, even if the UN does take over, there is a good chance they will mess things up. Either by quickly installing a uselessly fragile government, by installing a harsh dictatorship, or by dithering around so long that an anti-UN force forms.

New Re: Any volunteers to serve with UN peace force ?????????

Why is everyone so quitet ????

Great pay!, Opportunity to travel!, meet nice people!

Why would anyone not want to serve in a peace keeping army in Afghanistan ???

Cheers

New Nobody said it was easy
Nobody said it was going to be easy, but they found people to serve in Bosnia. If they can find people willing to serve in that sniper farm, they can find people willing to serve in a mine field.

In any case, a real UN peacekeeper force would have an easier time then a pure US colonial force. And handing the country back over to the Northern Alliance isn't solving the problem. It's just pushing it off for another generation, if that long.
