New Article topic suggestions?
So, I'm thinking about offering the [link|http://www.shepherd-express.com|hippy rag that I webmaster] a tech column. I doubt it would be profitable directly, but it probably makes for good exposure.

I'm trying to come up with a list of topics. Should be reasonably technical, but within the interest range of a general audience. I don't want to focus much on "how to" or anything, although the occasional tip would be good. Several legislative things spring to mind, DMCA is a bit stale.

I'd rather not burn too many bridges - I may need a job at an MS shop someday - but leave that aspect to me unless there is a hidden trap that you know of.

Yeah, I'm asking for free help in order for me to attempt to make some money. If any of you have a problem with that, I understand.

New How 'bout a howto...
...set up your own personal web site...PROPERLY (i.e. w/out falling into the IIS trap). Emphasis would be on standards, browser agnosticism, graphics, standards, tricks like how to use the backwaters of HTML, scripting, standards, Java (when to use, when NOT TO), cookies, security, etc....and oh, yes...standards!

Since every WP package in the world claims to allow you to "turn your documents into blindingly vivid web pagesamaze your firends and family...", the next generation of web kidiots is waiting in the wings. Just like the advent of word processing turned even the most simple of documents into ransom notes, so shall these new tools allow the untrained to turn a simple web page into a scramble of text and images. With a little guidance, perhaps some of these people can be spared the ransom note phase of web design, and can also be informed of alternatives to the Micros~1 way of doing things incorrectly.

Netizens all over the world will thank you for it!

New Hmmm.
Here's a couple...
  • Freenets
  • Securing your networked PC - and why it's important
  • How to set up an OSS desktop (maybe w/ a list of OSS application 'substitutes'?)
  • Fun with Scripting
  • Web Authoring basics and aesthetics
  • Home Networking (connection, file, and print sharing)
  • Game Review
  • PC Hardware recommendations and comparisons

New There's the old standby: Backups.
How to plan for them. Hardware and software needed. Partitioning strategies. Tapes versus removable hard drives (Doug Marker's recent post about 20 GB USB drives certainly is something to think about). Central backups versus desktop backups. How to make sure they'll work.

Stuff like that.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Re: There's the old standby: Backups.
Yes, I second that suggestion.

Among us, DeSitter's loss, is a sad example. Backup cohabiting with PC when all gets stolen. Could have been a fire with same result. Although fireproof box could help that.

I know of a (non-techie) Mac user who lost 3 years worth data. One gets complacent when things seem to work well for a long time. All disks fail eventually.

New A theme not unfamiliar here: ownership of *your* data
While this might not seem to be a major consideration for home users of toy s/ware - possibly the thesis might penetrate, to those who are also responsible in any business whatsoever.

That your spreadsheet data might not be legible in 2? 4? 6 years down the pike - through er improvements to the basic format; that ditto for your deathless prose, all 42 chapters: ought to strike some chords.

A great way to introduce the idea of open standards for all such data as you plan to keep indefinitely - or must have, in order to ply your trade. ie 'backup' yes! but *what* are you backing up (and how valuable)?

A.
New Thanks, guys
Looks like a theme developing.

I'll see what I can do with it.
