New Anyone ever had to file for physical disability?
My leg has gotten a lot worse, with a frankly open hole and exposed muscle with surgery required to close it and no prospect of this happening soon - I can't even walk around without plasma drainage messing up my clothes, no matter what the bandage I slap on, so job interviews etc. are impossible. How do I file for disability? How much do I get?

Also, what's the story with unemployment extension? I had assumed it was over when it was over. The state website is unclear.

(Norm: Don't bother replying with details for the mental. I'm sure that is completely different.)

New The only thing I've heard
Is that when applying for disability, don't be discouraged if you're turned down the first time, they turn almost everyone down the first time as part of the weeding-out process. Just reapply and they'll take your case seriously.

Look into MedicAid, any hospital should have info on federal and state programs you can use. Specifically look into university hospitals. A quick Google search shows that St. Louis University has a free clinic in North St. Louis that you might want to look into...OPEN DOOR HEALTH CLINIC\t1371 HAMILTON AVE, ST LOUIS, MO\t(314) 389-0008

New The parts I know are...
Having helped someone file for physical disability, I know the following info:

Have ALL your paperwork, from your birth certificate and SSN card to your hospital info, especially including anything that indicates earnings or money held. (i.e. unemployment, bank statements, etc.) Edit: If you are missing ANYTHING on paper, you have to go home and get it, and get at the END of the line.

Go prepared to stand in a really long line, if you can't stand, (my friend couldn't either), take someone who can stand for you, or bring a folding chair. Believe you me, you'll need it.

It also does not hurt to have a doctor's letter. My friend managed to get one, and it was one of the best pieces of paper he had going for him. If a doctor will certify that you aren't able to work in this condition, you have it made, most likely.

How much you get depends on what you earn, what you have, and other factors. I don't know if anyone can actually tell you that except the DAV.

I took my friend to the DAV Center (I believe that was what it was called), in downtown St. Louis. If you need the address or anything, I can get it in two days when I get home.

Good luck, sorry to hear it's so bad. :( I'm still keeping you in my prayers.

I can hardly stand in the loo, much less a line of freeloaders. There must be a way of doing it by proxy. The US website is predictably useless.

New Maybe you can call the DAV
And ask them what else you can do. All I know is my friend could not stand a long time either, so I had to stand in line for him.

Good luck!

New Any kind of disability claim
requires a lot of documentation from your doctors as to why your physical condition prevents you from working. You must also explain why you cannot work in the disability paperwork. Your doctors must order you not to work.

The more messed up you are, the better your chance of getting disability. My wife has a cousin who is older than her and can barely walk and has a number of ilnesses and was able to get disability. But he has low blood pressure, a heart condition, a weak back, and is over 300 pounds.

The pay will be based on how much SS Tax you have paid over the years and how close to retirement you are. After 65, you cannot apply for or collect it anymore, which should not be a problem for you. Consider over $1000 a month at least. You won't get rich, but you will get some money to live on. Get a cheap apartment and watch what you spend. You can get a part-time job and earn $700 a month, but any more than that gets you out of disability.

With your leg you should be able to get that handicaped sticker/hanger for your vehciles.

Good luck.
