Welcome to IWETHEY!

New hehehe
Unfortunately, if I did that I would probably lose first publishing rights which would mean no publisher would want to touch it. On the other hand, I could put the draft up on a protected site somewhere and draft a bunch of beta testers (since I have to rewrite anyway, it wouldn't hurt to have people point out things to work on).

So if someone wants to volunteer, all they need to do is sign my 3,000 page NDA. :)

New Publishing
1) You have to sign over the copyright - fine, been that way since Dickens.

2) You have to provide an editable copy - meaning, double-spaced and clearly printed.

3) Expect rejection. Be persistent.

New Re: Publishing
You don't sign away your copyright -- not with a reputable publisher, at any rate. You still own your own work... what you do is agree to give them the exclusive right to publish it for a certain length of time. That's why they're so keen on getting first publishing rights in the first place... it means they get the first shot at making money with it.

From the other side, it doesn't look particularly different -- they still publish the book. However, they can't enter into any other deals with that book... they can't for example, allow it to be optioned for a movie. That's something that has to be taken up directly with the author, because the author still owns the material.

As to the other two, yeah. I plan to start a "rejection letters" collection and have the first 50 framed...

While they were doing that I walked over to a place called the Oyster Bar - a real dive. But I knew the owner; he used to play for the Dolphins. I said, "HI GILL!" (You have to yell; he's hard of herring...)
