New Ignorance is no excuse
but they should have gone easy on her for being a minor.

What next, another 13 year-old girl gets busted for selling crack? "Honest, I did not know it was illegal!"

Makes me wonder just what are people teaching their children these days anyway about right and wrong, about the law, about morals and ethics? I am not talking about Religion, but it can be used here if possible. Ethically and morally it is wrong to steal something. Stealing music and sharing it with your friends is a serious ethical and moral violation. But I am one to talk most of my friends bought records and made bootleg tapes for their friends with it. Most stereos had the record player and tape player/recorder. Thing is back then they couldn't tell if a child was making a bootleg tape, and now they can tell if an MP3 is being shared.

Of course one could argue that ethnically it may be right to steal under certain conditions. Maybe in the case of the "Fair Use" part of the copyright to use the music for a school project or a parody.

New So if your kid...
...murders someone...you go to the big house for life, right?

The parent is being held responsible for activities of the child. Activities that the parent wasn't aware of. But you seem to think its ok to go after the parents.

And everybody seems to think that this behavior is something new.

New tech applied to an old problem. In the old days they called them cassettes.

New What I said was
that they should have gone easy on her for being a minor. Try her as a minor, not an adult.

If my child murdered someone I'd be devistated, all the teaching we have had with him to not do violence and instead to try and talk out differences apparently made no difference in him. I'd do the jail time, but I would protest that it was not my fault because I taught him otherwise. I would hope that if I got punished, that he would get punished as well. If it happened for real, I would not go to jail, but instead would be in a mental institution because I would not be able to handle it.

New Re: What I said was
A mental institution is a jail with thicker walls and no "get out" day.

Norm, some of the things you say are just out there.

New But it is true
I would have a break-down and end up having a Doctor write me up to be put in a mental hospital. I'd also have no choice in it either given my past history of mental illnesses.

New Re: But it is true
Actually, if you're in jail and crazy, you won't end up as someone's bitch. Life has all kinds of plus sides.
-drl
New Ah but
I am not the violent type of crazy, more of the sad or depressed type of crazy. I am only a danager to myself. I would not last very long in jail, I'd most likely annoy the wrong person and get a shiv stuck into my gut and die.

Mental Hospitals I can survive in, higher security, and I seem to get along with crazy people. All I have to do is make them laugh, or give them items off my food tray, or do arts and crafts for them at activity time. Just make friends with the psychopaths so they don't try to hurt or kill me. :)

Ah come on, you can visit me on weekends. I'll make a leather belt or wallet for you. :)

New Re: go after the parents.
The idea is not completely without merit. The parent(s) do have some responsibility to monitor the use of technology by their kids. (If they don't they're morons and should be locked away on those grounds).

I'm not saying I agree with Norm here, just that there is a grain of reason in his position.

Java, Junk. Both start with a "J", both have four letters. Coincidence? I think not.
New Thank you for getting my point
and posting about it.

You would think after all the media attention that it has received that a 13 year-old girl would have heard how the RIAA is going after music sharers. You would also think that the parents should have known what she was doing. If they didn't, she might as well have been chatting with kiddie porn people or pedophiles and they'd never know it. Always keep an eye on what your child does on the Internet, if you really love them.

New Nit
Of course one could argue that ethnically it may be right to steal under certain conditions. Maybe in the case of the "Fair Use" part of the copyright to use the music for a school project or a parody.
If it falls under Fair Use it is not stealing. Saying "sometimes stealing is OK" is accepting the RIAA's position that all use that doesn't involve paying them is stealing.

Implicitly condoning stupidity since 2001.
New Good point
I hadn't thought about that.

Using the song under "Fair Use" is not stealing.

New another nit
Of course one could argue that ethnically it may be right to steal under certain conditions.
Could Norm have been suggesting that theft may be excused or not depending on the ethnicity of the offender? Inquiring minds want to know.

New Uncle G, you're picking nits...
...even *I* considered remarking on... and decided to ignore.

Come on, you old gutter-demon, you: This is *Norm* writing, remember?
