Terry gross interviews Jeffrey Goldberg (on NPR natch), who reports of the children essentially memorizing a language they couldn't read, nor was 'reading' the aim of the teaching. (I missed whether books were in short supply or whether the aim was less than "teaching reading"). He's writing a book on middle East (natch too?). Children in this school are ignorant of the outside world, have bizarre ideas about what "the US" is like, are utterly sexually repressed: One student mentioned he had not hugged / been hugged by his mother since puberty. Even sisters are kept away. So they never encounter a female in any proximity. (But although homosexuality is a lethal offense - not even these Fundamentalists appear to succeed in killing the senses: he was propositioned several times by these males = associating Murica with 'instant licentiousness'). "Perfect Jihad machine" was his description of these children - ever ready to be asked (and to volunteer) for Any mission however suicidal. We have met the enemy and he is prepubescent; imagine the ineptness with the post-mortem assigned virgins.. yup it is The Nation of Isl.. [Child Abusers] I suppose this makes Lord of the Flies an innocent schoolboy excess.. by comparison. ............... This disgusting report followed by a Pakistani explaining the "Lesser Jihad: the war kind" and the "Greater Jihad: knowing thyself" - (seem to have gotten That one right). Mentioning that bin-L is uneducated in the theology, has no 'power' to declare fatwas OR jihads... And so it goes. A.

They showed these Pakistani/Afghan kids memorizing the Quran in, to them, a foreign language while bobbing their heads. Interestingly, the movement is identical to that of the Hasidic Jews at the Wailing Wall. You may also recall, it was not that long ago, the Catholic Mass was celebrated in Latin. To point out a big difference though - people were taught to read said Latin. And speak it. Longer ago, it was more of a issue to keep people controlled (Hense Luther, et al), but more recently (unless you meant pre-Luther) it wasn't the same thing. People could - and most were - expected to learn Latin as part of their studies. Not just memorize what was said to have been said. That's History. :) Addison

Our public school system sucks rocks. But it's still better than this. Post #12,798 by boxley 10/10/01 10:33:08 PM Reply	according to a Saudi I met in Chi town Arabic is easy to learn and the Koran is all you need to know to practise arabic. Malaysians learn the koran in arabic so why not pakistanis? The rest of it is shear indoctrination of course. As far as Catholics and the latin mass is concerned, reading at all was highy discouraged except for priests and being able to read and own a book that was not the bible was a burning offence. thanx, bill tshirt front "born to die before I get old" thshirt back "fscked another one didnja?"
