I exclusively use

[link|http://www.cygwin.com/|Cygwin] and [link|http://cygwin.com/xfree/|Cygwin/X] for X-Display.

Nearly ZERO effort required to properly make it work with Linux.

Cygwin is Extrememly AWESOME. Free and it Works. Works well. Plus it give you UNIX on Windows... well sorta.

Anywho, all you need to start is [link|http://cygwin.com/setup.exe|setup.exe].

I usually download everything into an install Dir and then really install from there.

New Cygwin preferred, alternative: Starnet

Offers a "rootless" server (Cygwin's working on this), and an (IIRC) 30 day trial. Purchase is used to be relatively inexpensive, it's now $245 single-seat. WRQ Reflection X & Humminbgird Exceed X are ~$320-$370 or so.

Last time I tried it, XWin-32 could not do the RENDER extension, meaning - crappy fonts. So I shitcanned it for good.

There are no good choices for Windows X servers.
