Boot and root on a 1.7 floppy (yes 1.7), many tools, full network. Amazing.

Send him a nice email. Linux-d00d he is.

New 1722 - almost as good as the Amiga
[link|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floppy_disk|Floppy disk]
The Commodore Amiga computers used other kinds of floppy disk optimizations for extra storage. One was to not use sectors, and instead write an entire track as a single object with no stop or start information which normally takes up some 10% of the disk. They combined this with a variable sector format similar to the Mac, but without the complexity of the variable-speed drive (in retrospect, one wonders why Apple developed this solution at all). These changes add up to allowing considerably better storage capacity of about 880KB on a DD floppy, and 1.76MB on HD.

New Loooonnnggg time fave tool.

You'll find it mentioned in my [link|http://twiki.iwethey.org/Main/DebianChrootInstall|Debian Chroot Install] instructions. I was first pointed at it by Heather Stern (part of [link|http://www.linuxgazett.net/|Linux Gazette]'s Answer Gang, back ~1998 or so. It's saved my ass several times (so blame Tom for me still being here).

[link|http://www.lnx-bbc.org/|LNX-BBC] is more tools (including an X environment) on a business-card form-factor CD. Very useful in its place -- has more capabilities than TRB but ties up the (or an) CD drive. Nice bit is that it usually fits into a PDA case making it handy to tote. And of course [link|http://www.knoppix.org/|Knoppix] is there when you can carry a full-sized CDROM.

\r\n\r\n

There are scads of micro-Linuxes as well, including Trinux, mu-Linux, and others. [link|http://lwn.net/Distributions/index.php3#floppy|LWN has a good list of floppy distros] (CDs follow). All told, 358 listed distributions.

New LNX-BBC
I used your small-gifty just t'other day re an acquaintance's Doze Won't Start problem (into which I did not wish to go).

Impressive when that tiny biz-card thingie Boots! the sucker and IDs all that detritus and, effectively sez tacitly - -

"Lady, yer Doze is flummoxed; it ain't the box"
(and BTW "yer CD reader ain't bad, either")

.. and that's a pretty old copy, yet.
Thanx again!
