New freewheels and cassettes
near the top of [link|http://www.sheldonbrown.com/k7.html|this page] is a picture that clearly shows the difference. Given the age of the bike, I expect that you're dealing with a freewheel. If that's the case it should transfer easily to the new hub. The hard part might be finding an appropriate rear hub.

Thanks for the pointer. I'd seen some of his pages, and [link|http://sheldonbrown.com/free-k7.html|this] one directly answers the question - he shows the Suntour that what we've got. It looks like it needs a $7 tool that he sells that "may destroy the freewheel". Ack. But he also sells Suntour freewheels and lots of other goodies so I may be able to get the parts needed from him.
