New MSFT lands a Beemer

Where I come from, which isn't where I grew up, though it's where I spent the first part of my childhood, "BMW" stands for "basic Marin wheels". For Microsoft, it's "beat monopoly whack" -- in the EU.

\r\n\r\n

I see this as an overt attempt to gain sway over the EU, where Microsoft [link|http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/33130.html|still faces anti-trust actions]. I think Microsoft thought they'd have this wrapped up on schedule, in early June o fthis year, and is starting to get concerned.

New Perhaps this is mentioned in the story...
but I wasn't able to read it - it wants a registration.

BMW was already tied to MS as its new 5-, 6- and 7-series [link|http://www.bmwworld.com/technology/idrive.htm|i-Drive] system uses Windows CE. Putting someone from BMW on the board helps cement that relationship (and I'm sure it is intended to help with the EU antitrust issues as well).

(Note that the stories about the Thailand finance minister being trapped in his car due to failure of the i-Drive system apparently were incorrect as his car didn't have i-Drive so didn't have WinCE.)
