New new hubs & spokes
possibly the cheapest route is to replace the hubs and spokes. A good bicycle shop can do that for you in an afternoon. The bike will feel much smoother and faster.

I'm going to guess that the headset and bottom bracket also aren't as smooth as they could be. Wouldn't hurt to have the bike mechanic take a look at them too.
Have fun,

Hi Carl,

Thanks for the tips.

Looking through the Nashbar catalog it seems that the front hub would be easy to choose (I only have to specify the number of spoke holes - 36 in my case). However, for the rear, the hub seems to be a function of the gear cassette used (e.g. Dura Ace, Ultegra 9 speed, 105 9-speed, Veloce 9 speed). I fear that replacing the hub on the rear will be non-trivial since I want to keep the 5 speed casette. At least I think it's a casette. Maybe it's a "freewheel" system. I can't figure out the difference...

Nashbar does offer some 27" wheels, but there's the issue of specifying the rear gearing - [link|http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?sku=6238|http://www.nashbar.c...file.cfm?sku=6238]

I'll call around some this weekend and see what can be done. Thanks again for the tips!

Cheers,
Scott.
New freewheels and cassettes
near the top of [link|http://www.sheldonbrown.com/k7.html|this page] is a picture that clearly shows the difference. Given the age of the bike, I expect that you're dealing with a freewheel. If that's the case it should transfer easily to the new hub. The hard part might be finding an appropriate rear hub.
Have fun,
Carl Forde
New Sheldon has some good info!
Thanks for the pointer. I'd seen some of his pages, and [link|http://sheldonbrown.com/free-k7.html|this] one directly answers the question - he shows the Suntour that what we've got. It looks like it needs a $7 tool that he sells that "may destroy the freewheel". Ack. But he also sells Suntour freewheels and lots of other goodies so I may be able to get the parts needed from him.

<off to send Sheldon an e-mail...>

Thanks!

Cheers,
Scott.

The revolution will not be televised. You can apt-get it from the usual mirrors, however.
