Lest we forget, today marks the 20th anniversary of the terrorist bombing of the U.S. Marine Corps barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. This cowardly and unprovoked attack by the Islamic Jihad, the same enemy America still pursues some 20 years later, claimed the lives of 242 Americans who were killed in their sleep as they served their country on a mission of peace. The victims, 241 military personnel and one civilian, had many common interests, but they were targeted singularly because they were Americans. This suicide bombing, along with the attack on the U.S. Embassy in Beirut on April 18, 1983, were, arguably, the first terrorists attacks against America and Americans by the Islamic Jihad, little known in 1983 but household words today. As such, these events should be remembered, and honored, each and every day.
