This should perk you up...
If you want Open Office, [link|http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/ooo-osx_downloads.html|http://porting.openo...sx_downloads.html]
You might also want to check out [link|http://osx.hyperjeff.net/Apps/|http://osx.hyperjeff.net/Apps/]
Not to pick nits, but you write: "With roots in *BSD Unix and Mach, it tends to be quite stable, unlike the MS Windows OSes."
While I tend to agree with most of this (the Mach part especially), I think you would be more accurate to attribute it's roots as being more "NeXtish"...
Welcome to a whole new world of computing... The future. Now.

The only thing stopping me
from buying a Mac now is the cost.

Thanks, alas, I cannot even afford that
Maybe if I saved up for it over a year or two I might. Thanks for the link.

This out to perk you up again...
[link|http://www.apple.com/emac/|http://www.apple.com/emac/] ... I have installed quite a few of these machines at the campus and they are quite a pleasant compromise. I want a G5, no ifs ands or buts, but for under $1200, I can get a decent eMac with Superdrive (DVD -R/CD -WR)... I can make extra money doing friends weddings, etc. with iDVD and iMovie (already paid for my last Mac that way) with minimal investment in training.
I know this can't compete with low end intel boxen (shit, I just picked up a P4 2.4 Ghz with decent specs for <$600), but I can tell you, I'm much more happy about my Mac purchase.
Side note: from now on, make it a habit to always buy external Firewall peripherals (hard drives, DVD burners, etc...) and use them between both platforms. Mac users are very used to thinking outside the box because they have had SCSI for most of the Mac history and people learned... Plus, the original mac design require this torque wrench thingy that busted your fingers to hell...
Rambling now. Hope you give the Macs a good look.

Perked me up!
For some reason I didn't think Open Office was out for the Mac. I guess what I'd read was referring to a native OS X program.
Coming from an OS/2, I don't mind running "non-native" software. I ran DOS, Win3.x, Win32(via [link|http://odin.netlabs.org/|ODIN]) and even X11 software all the time :-)

If you are nix minded...
which you are, you may want to run Apple's X11 or Oroborough (sp?). I have been using Apple's x11 for about four months and ssh'ing to my Solaris boxen to run Matlab, Maple and the "usual" ware...
No complaints here. I run Office X for simplicity (and it only cost me $25 bucks here at a university) and compatibility, but I have done a lot of testing with Open Office and Star Office... The nice thing about having a Mac is that you have the choice of running commercial ware if you so desire. I remember Microsoft Office when it was MAC ONLY (from '85 to '91) and of course still feel most comfortable using it.
My $.02

"Ouroboros", it seems.
Here are some links:
[link|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ouroboros|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ouroboros] -- this one is especially interesting with regards to the spelling: Several alternative spellings (try them; go to that link, and then change the spelling in the address line of your browser!) are redirected to this node.
[link|http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node=ouroboros|http://www.everythin...pl?node=ouroboros]

But alternative spellings abound, as for example in the window manager I suppose you mean: [link|http://www.oroborus.org/|http://www.oroborus.org/]

Thank you once again, sir cyclic
I might as well just dump these links out while we're on the subject... [link|http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/unix_open_source/|http://www.apple.com...unix_open_source/] [link|http://www.macosxapps.com/|http://www.macosxapps.com/] [link|http://www.macosxhints.com/|http://www.macosxhints.com/]
And because of the snide comment I made in the "other" forum, linux runs just fine on macs, thankyouverymuch... [link|http://www.linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=4|http://www.linuxiso....stro.php?distro=4] (the best distro I have found for PPC) Sourceforge has a lot of projects going but their site is becoming hard to navigate for morons like me.
I have been amazed at the quality of the OSX products. Unique freeware (open source for OS X) apps like TexShop, HenWen (available for Linux, also), Sharepoints, etc. are opening up the open source ethic/product to a much wider audience. This is a win not just for Mac converts but for the broader Linux/*nix market as well. Just my .02 copecks...
What the frip (frick) do I know, though?

Those were some seriously fascinating links you found... Great reading material. Remind me to look up the spelling of shit I don't remember from now on.
