New Re: Got yer Iraq lies right here
Nice way of avoiding the argument and refusing to admit that your government has been lying to you. I'll take the bait and run with it. Going down your list...

The letter home astroturf charge: True. The letters were written by Lieutenant Colonel Dominic Caraccilo, not the soldiers who were asked to sign them. This means that the words were not the soldiers' own, which is the heart of the astroturf charge. Further, in the military, if your commanding officer "asks" you to do something, you damn well do it.

"The Iraqi people hate us foreign invaders!": Half-true. Some Iraqi people do, enough to form a small native resistance. Others don't care, others welcome the US presence.

"Massive US casualties in Iraq!": False, but I've never seen this claimed. There are casualties, but not enough to matter in the long run. Most doves point out casualties just to show that things are not going as smoothly as the US government claims.

"It's a quagmire!": Mostly false. Things are quagmirish enough to stall US exit, but not nearly as bad as Vietnam.

"America supported Saddam in the first place!": True, but a fallacy that doesn't help any anti-war arguments.

"We should have let the UN handle it": True, considering that there turned out to have been no unconventional weapons programs.

"It's all about the oil": Mostly true. Iraq's oil assets are a very strategic acquisition which support will weaken US and western dependence upon pro-terrorist and anti-West regimes. The US's neutrality in the face of active nuclear programs by terrorist-friendly Pakistan and North Korea shows that there was more than concern about WMD involved in Iraq.

Invading nuke-building North Korea or a more brutal dictatorship than Saddam's would have been a better use of US forces: True.

Rachel Corrie: Irrelevant.

Saving Private Lynch: Mostly true. The medical records came out: she was not shot or stabbed, and her wounds were consistent with a traffic accident. The region around the hospital was secured before the rescue, but the medical personnel say the soldiers barged in like it was a combat zone and harassed them.

The BBC's reporting was good: True. The Foreman debunking doesn't mention the words "British" or "BBC". The BBC's reporting was generally equal or superior to that of, say, Al Jazeera, Fox, or CNN. All news orgs had bad stories.

"We won with Clinton's military!" True. You can thank Clinton for the Predators and JDAMs, Reagan for the tanks and conventional aircraft, and Carter for the stealth aircraft. Each builds on top of the last.

Things were bad in Iraq immediately after the invasion: True, as in all invasions. Things got better more quickly in some areas than in others.

Things were better under Saddam pre-1991: True. Iraq was the most modernized country in the Middle East except for Israel until the '91 war and ensuing sanctions ruined the country.

Things were better under Saddam post-1991: False.

Saddam never killed anyone: False, but find me somebody who has made this claim. Otherwise, it's not a lie.

The museum looting: Mostly false. The last count I've seen (from July) is 13,000 items missing including 47 major exhibits, but nobody knows how much of that was prior to the invasion.

Bush lied about uranium shipments from Nigeria: True.

Iraq Body Count figures: False. Unofficial US sources had the count at 3,000 civilian dead and 8,000 military near the end of the invasion, which is a far cry from Herold's 7,000 civilian dead. The gap between minimum and maximum is far greater than would be expected in the confusion of war, and Oxblog's arguments against Herold are valid. Further, Herold counts street crime deaths in his count.

Bush lied about reasons for going to war: True.

Troop morale is poor: True, assuming that you consider a third of forces admitting poor or very poor morale, versus a quarter admitting good or very good , as poor morale.

The plans for the war were made beforehand: True. PNAC, signed by Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, others.

The US should be held to a higher standard than the UN: True, considering that the US claimed they knew where the weapons were and the UN found nothing only out of gross incompetence, and that the US has had unfettered access to Iraq's scientists.

Clinton shouldn't have bombed Iraq in 1998: Irrelevant.

The US and UK should not have supported Saddam in the 1980s: True.

The US fscked up in Iraq and Afghanistan: True or false depending upon the arguments. There are plenty of true arguments, Hanson chooses to deny a few false ones.

The US cannot conquer Iraq: False.

Iraqis will rise up against the US: Mostly false. There are some scattered instances of this occuring, but the larger part of the populace is docile.

My rebuttal to your strawmen: True.

So, out of 29 claims you attempt to debunk, only 9 are actually false and 2 are even irrelevant to the invasion. The other 18 false claims are actually true, although some are only true to degrees which may be debated.

Now, how about [link|http://www.harpers.org/online/revision_thing/|reading the article]?
New Re: Got yer Iraq lies right here
"America supported Saddam in the first place!": True, but a fallacy that doesn't help any anti-war arguments.

It's not a direct anti-war argument, but there is an important point here. It's not just that the US supported Saddam before, but that in many cases it's exactly the same people. The people who are now saying that Saddam must be removed because he has WMDs are the same people who gave him those WMDs and encouraged him to use them in the first place.

If somebody says that Saddam must be removed because he had WMDs, the next logical question is why wasn't that an issue before? We gave him those WMDs, why is it now a problem? How can the same people that encouraged him to use those WMDs now being saying that he has to be removed because he used them?

It's the inability by the pro-war camp to answer those questions effectivly that makes it an anti-war issue.

New Nice way of avoiding the facts and throwing up more BS.
You didn't make an argument. You just reiterated a Big Lie. You did it to distract form thing that matter - namely the need to destroy the culture that breeds these fanatical murderers. I've exposed it, by pointing to documented facts. And I'll keep doing it.

Those who say Dubya is a liar are themselves liars. Including you.

The "atroturf" is a bogus charge. I've [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=120975|already dealt with that] and you know it. You can't answer my rebuttal, so you just pretend it never happened. Why should anyone stoop to argue with someone childish enough to do that? You're not worthy of being debated with. That's the whole point.

Oh, and you're a major league fuckwit to say that we ought to attack a regime that has nuclear missiles, when we haven't got a defense for that yet. You've said a lot of shitbrained things, and you keep saying them, but that's beyond merely fucked up. That's Dr. Strangelove fucked up. That's the kind of fucked up that can get the whole human race killed. Damn, that's fucked up.

God help this planet if you ever become Commander in Chief. You'd be a President right out of [link|http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0451155750/104-1645165-6391932?v=glance|a Stephen King novel].

New tangaroa lied about Bush lying: true
[link|http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A39834-2004Jul9.html\n|Or maybe he just chose to believe a lie]

Excerpt:

Wilson's assertions -- both about what he found in Niger and what the Bush administration did with the information -- were undermined yesterday in a bipartisan Senate intelligence committee report.

The panel found that Wilson's report, rather than debunking intelligence about purported uranium sales to Iraq, as he has said, bolstered the case for most intelligence analysts. And contrary to Wilson's assertions and even the government's previous statements, the CIA did not tell the White House it had qualms about the reliability of the Africa intelligence that made its way into 16 fateful words in President Bush's January 2003 State of the Union address.

Yesterday's report said that whether Iraq sought to buy lightly enriched "yellowcake" uranium from Niger is one of the few bits of prewar intelligence that remains an open question. Much of the rest of the intelligence suggesting a buildup of weapons of mass destruction was unfounded, the report said.

The report turns a harsh spotlight on what Wilson has said about his role in gathering prewar intelligence, most pointedly by asserting that his wife, CIA employee Valerie Plame, recommended him.

I say:

All you who berate me for not responding to X, where X is your pet manufactured scandal of the day, be careful what you wish for. I'll respond to X, for any given value of X, at a time of my choosing. My policy now is to wait till the firm evidence is in, however long it takes, then beat all the braying jackasses over the head with it. There is no statute of limitations on falsehood.

And I'll do it every time. Without mercy. The same treatment I'm giving this yellowcake bullshit is what I'll give every other piece of bullshit that's been flung: wait till it's properly ripened, then throw it back. Your only escape is to retract every dubious assertion you've ever made, before it gets exposed as a lie, not after. Better get cracking.

New Thanks for the K5 news, I think....
In response to Dan Gillmor's recent blog [link|http://weblog.siliconvalley.com/column/dangillmor/archives/010590.shtml#010590|post] about his troubles with trolls, I wrote him a note indicating it was a difficult problem and that K5 was in a bit of [link|http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2004/3/24/0502/96199|paralysis] over it. Nice to see that not 24 hours later the K5 new user queue reopens.

Perhaps I should create World Peace next. Thanks.

Cheers,
Scott.
New I'm hoping that the new direction for K5...
...will be the iron fist in a velvet glove.

I suppose I should try to match link for link, but I've got a life. Four or five should suffice to make the point. Just one assuredly will not.
