New Germany passed US as exporter in August
[link|http://www.euobserver.com/index.phtml?aid=13029|EU Observer]
In August, Germany took pole position as the worlds leading export country from the US, with exports 7% higher than the Americans, according to OECD and IMF statistics quoted by FT Deutschland.

When you consider the relative size of the countries, that is pretty amazing.

This is also why Germany has not been too happy about the rise of the euro recently. Germany would rather see the euro trail the dollar slighly.
New Oh shit.
Are the stats trustworthy?

New I would say fairly reliable
OECD is Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and IMF is International Monetary Fund. I trust that neither of those organizations are intentionally bending the statistics, but on the scale of this the margin of error is probably in the billons.

New I've been wondering...
If the export is measured in dollars, the euro went up recently. Could it be that the same amount of export now accounts for more dollars? Or am I off the deep end here?

New Looks like both

Exchange rate movements are a factor. The upward trend of German exports in dollar terms in the first half of this year has been strengthened by the surge of the euro against the US currency.

I found this related article that suggests that German exports are climbing but that the rise in the euro was what suddenly put them over the top.

New But not as importers, yay us!
We get to continue having a lifestyle based on an unsustainable balance of trade! We get to get things without paying for them yet!

Oh wait, maybe this isn't a good thing...

Cheers,
Ben

New US Import backlog...

...of shipping containers. 40 footers are going for about $1500. Delivered. Might make decent backwoods housing. As I noted looking at China imports -- we're receiving about five times as many of these puppies as we're sending back filled, and it's apparently cheaper to just make new ones at the origin point. Observed by several people, but most visibly [link|http://www.morethanzerosum.com/Commute.html|here] (search "freight containers" on page.
