Webpage review request
I've updated [link|http://kmself.home.netcom.com/|my homepage] and some related pages (mostly [link|http://kmself.home.netcom.com/Rants/|rants]) using CSS. I've had a few eyeballs over it, would appreciate knowing if there are any fatal errors. \r\n\r\n I've tested this in Galeon, w3m, dillo, and Konqueror. Biggest issues are that my mugshot gets covered by lower content text window in Konq, and bullets run into callouts on left side in Galeon. I've had someone gander it in MSIE, appears OK. My own view is captured in [link|http://guildenstern.dyndns.org/~karsten/homepage.png|this 800x600 screenshot] (may be down ATM). I'm also concerned that colors are compatible (blue is bad for conflicting with link colors). Be interested to know what people make of the 'on-hover' style as well. \r\n\r\n CSS shamelessly ripped from [link|http://zgp.org/~dmarti|Don Marti], with mods. \r\n\r\n Thanks.

Almost perfect in Safari (1.0 v85.5)
Everything's peachy except for the 'bullets run into callouts on left side' issue.
I like the on-hover style, I don't think the colours are an issue wrt links. Overall your page is very pretty, and not just because it has your photo on it ;)

Mixed feelings...
Mozilla 1.4, Debian - The dots for the <ul> entries in the main pane (Linux, Rants, etc.) are overlapping the blue boxes on the left. If this was intentional, please be aware that it looks asinine.
- I like the color scheme.
- The blue boxes extend waaaaayyyy past the bottom of the main pane. This looks very strange.
- Speaking of main pains, there's a pic of something off an E. E. Doc Smith chlorine planet up on the top right...
- There are no sheep.

point the third & first
try resizing your browser window. The page will reflow and you can easily make the blue boxes stay within the main page.
Karsten, lose the bullets.
All-in-all nicely done (except the bullets).

Resizing does nothing.
And a page that requires resizing to get it to "work" is broken (or the browser is borked, one of the two). :-)

Re: Resizing does nothing.
Try skinny. \r\n\r\n I'm not saying this excuses the design. But if you run the window down to ~800 - 640 pixels wide, you should get a long, skinny content window which drops well past the end of the callouts. \r\n\r\n What this is a demonstration of is that the page is viewable at a wide range of displays, flexibly accomodating anything from large, hi-res displays down to the piddlin' 640x480 gramma Win3x default res. Which I'm somewhat proud of.

\r\n1. The dots for the <ul> entries in the main pane (Linux, Rants, etc.) are overlapping the blue boxes on the left. I like the color scheme.\r\n \r\n\r\n Thanks. \r\n\r\n \r\n3. The blue boxes extend waaaaayyyy past the bottom of the main pane. This looks very strange.\r\n \r\n\r\n Few things going on there. \r\n\r\n The callouts are bigger than they should be on account of content. Three of those (AOL, Viruses, Patents) are going to get smaller and/or become articles. Which should help the problem somewhat. OTOH, I plan to add more boxes... \r\n\r\n I can tweak the bottom extent of the callouts by making them wider. I've played with that, and settled on 200 px for the moment, though I've bumped it as high as 240 in design. Very easy to change that with CSS ;-) The main content text will reflow around the callouts, which is handy. \r\n\r\n I may add to the main content to stretch it out a bit. Mostly I was working on layout rather than content, but with an aim of making both easier to work with. \r\n\r\n \r\n 4. Speaking of main pains, there's a pic of something off an E. E. In IE, the boxes for both p and ul line up. The bullets appear outside the content block. You might try either: 1. Increasing padding-left on #content by 10 pixels or so. Both p and ul will shift to the right, but their content will still line up vertically. 2. Wrapping the UL in a div, and setting padding on that (or margin on ul). Opposite effect: Only the ul block will shift right, so its content will no longer line up vertically with the p blocks.

Re: UL bullets
I've increased the indent on the navboxes (callout boxes). In Galeon, this seems to work. In Konq, I've still got the problem as the offset for bullets is quite large.

Changes (box hang fixed, bullets not)
Widened the boxes by 40 px, which should spare the hanging-past-the-end problem. Still don't know how to deal with bullets.

bullets fixed
the bullets are outside the blue boxes as they should be on Mozilla 1.5 RC2 on Mac OS X. However, in the top box "Karsten M. Self is now on a line below the "Home | Mail". It looks like [link|http://www3.telus.net/StormLantern/images/kms.tiff|this]
I still think your presentation would be better without the bullets. Your formatting does a better job of conveying the same info...

Re: bullets fixed
However, in the top box "Karsten M. Self is now on a line below the "Home | Mail" \r\n\r\n That's a level of detail and client-variance I can deal with. I'm looking for an overall-pleasing layout without worrying about nits. The bullet thing wasn't acceptable. \r\n\r\n I may play with the title bar a bit, but I'm relatively pleased with it.

Re: Webpage review request
The blue boxes overhang the main content area. This has something to do with font rendering I think. The metrics aren't working out.
Looks a lot like a howto - I'd copy the design of something like the SF Chronicle, a nice minimalist newpaper layout.

Box overhang
The box overhang is intentional. For a couple of reasons. \r\n\r\n One is that I can do it that way. I sort of like the effect. \r\n\r\n The other is that my main "content" type can be indented somewhat from the left margin, but not overly. If I had to make the content fit fully to the right of the navigation boxes, I'd be losing a lot of page space. The content text will flow under the nav boxes (you can see this currently, resize page if the effect isn't clear) if there's enough bottom-hang to it. So I get a decent bit of layout without lots of negative space.

Weird "scrollbar dip" effect on entering/leaving links.
When the mouse cursor goes onto or off a link, the vertical scrollbar dips down for a fraction of a second; as if the browser were recalculating the height of the page each time, and temporarily arriving at a higher result; when at the top of the page, it grows; when at or very near the bottom, the effect doesn't happen at all.
This is in IE 5.00 on Windows NT 4 (at work).
Also, in regards to the Dilcue page: "In Memoriam" has no 'u' in it.

Re: I hate the luminous-lighting-up-links
Explanation for those. \r\n\r\n On my userContent.css, I specify link colors. Mostly 'coz I like blue for unvisited, purple for visited. Which doesn't always fit with a page's background colors (dark blue for nav bars is epidemic). Experimenting with changing BG/FG colors turned out to be less than optimal (though I've got a black-on-white.css for pages which are utterly unreadable). And some sites (Slashdot IIRC) were hiding links as same color as text w/ no underlines. So I bolded links and did the hover/click thing as feeback. I find it a very useful cue. Also helps me know (when getting laggy response on a remote-X connection) when I'm actually on an active link. \r\n\r\n What's your issue with it? Distracting? As a non-typical response, I could see that. Of course, it's the sort of thing you can turn off with your own userContent.CSS ;-)
