New Read the !@#$%^&*() link
The release name is, um, inspired.

What part of "gestalt" don't you understand?
New "Inspired" by whom, and why?!? (This is the Reg guy, right?)
New I would take Charles Atlas by the [CRC] hand [same thing]
You can lead a Finn to water, eh?

What part of "gestalt" don't you understand?
New So, are you saying it *isn't* a year-plus late, or...
...that it *doesn't* include "a note warning that this initial Alpha build 'does not include anything of use to end users'"?

Or, isn't it true that the GPL-ed Qt 2.2 has "finally won the blessing of RMS"?

Just checking, you see... So far, it's looking as if he's just reporting the facts.

Next, isn't he allowed to think that KDE "seems to extend its lead over GNOME with each major release"?

And doesn't he have at least an arguable point that "the disadvantages of splitting brainpower and resources between two incompatible projects now outweigh the benefits of innovation, and losing the all-important network effect"?

You may call the release moniker "inspired", but AFAICS, it's rather petty, childish, silly, and ridiculous.

Enough to make me consider (Heh -- "*inspiring*" me to) skipping Gnome and sticking to KDE when next I try to install Linux on this box (which will hopefully be this weekend).

Think that's a desirable effect of what you call being "inspired"?

Still think it's all that funny?

New Let's put it this way
I was shown the joke by its butt. The t-shirt suggestion (see FoTW article) was mine.

I think the joke's as petty as Andrew wants to make it, which isn't very. His complaints on GNOME are relatively on-mark.

Me?

If I want to show a h4x0r a k3wl desktop, I point 'em at GNOME.

If I want to show a l0053r a friendly desktop, I point 'em at KDE.

If I want to get work done, I fire up WindowMaker.

My apps of choice: vim, mutt, and w3m for about 75% of my work. Galeon, AbiWord, Pan, and GIMP are from the GNOME camp. KOrganizer and a handful of games, from KDE.

I'm glad all of 'em exist, frankly. I'd like to see them interoperate smoothly.
