New Puzzled
Why ship tapes to a near hot site? If it was near, synchronized SANS over Fibre would be more efficient. A linux based SAN would be cheaper, just backup over the fibre.
thanx,
bill

New Actually over 3k tapes
And I should have quoted "near", as in "near" hot site. The data center in in MN, the recovery site is in NC. It was intended to be a "not quite hot site". It has now become just a recovery site. Won't go into details...

Tapes are "square" tapes (cartridges). Don't remember type, nor capacity.

As to the number, we have another significant DB2 app that is moving to this DC which will add another 2-3k tapes per backup!

And yes, we are looking to use remote vaulting or some other electronic method of moving the backups.

OT, FWIW I'll be testing to become a CBCP (certified business continuity planner) next week. Anyone in Des Moines???

the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord stands forever."

New 3480 or 3490
3480 maxes at about 600MB.
3490 goes to about 2.5 GB

They write MAX 9MB per second, usually slower.

You really need an upgrade for your tape hardware.
New 3590K Media, Drives, 3494 Tape Library and TSM == Shizzit
One Tape is upto 120GB, typically ~90GB, they write @ 40MByte/Sec sustained.... Smoking.

Since you have IBM already.... look @ a 3494 tape library setup and 3590 tape drives... of course Tivoli Storage Manager with DRM.

Absolutely positively the best setup I have used. I would use it anywhere... that wanted something like it.

I see, I saw, I archive everything!
New AIT3, baby!
I've been getting good results backing up well over 200G a night with a Sony Lib-162 16-slot twin-drive library. I expect to be able to take this to over 400G a night before having to use more than two tapes :)
