LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Illusionist Roy Horn of the duo Siegfried & Roy was in critical condition Saturday, a day after one of his own tigers mauled him during his popular Las Vegas show, biting him in the neck and dragging him off stage. Authorities were uncertain about his chances for recovery.

Horn suffered a serious injury to the left side of his neck and underwent surgery late Friday.

It is nice to see, however, [link|http://www.cnn.com/2003/SHOWBIZ/10/06/roy.attacked/index.html|that he appears to be recovering].

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (CNN) -- Roy Horn, half of the Las Vegas duo Siegfried & Roy, was able to move his hands, feet, and give a "thumbs-up" signal Monday, hospital officials said, three days after being mauled by one of his tigers during a show.

University Medical Center officials said 59-year-old Horn was still in critical condition.

He suffered massive blood loss in the incident, the officials said, and also had a stroke after the mauling.

New Haven't googled yet, but
I heard on the radio this morning that the Mirage was very upset, wondering how they'll replace the lost (approximately) $45 million in annual revenue and (approximately) $5 million in annual net income that Siegfried and Roy's show produced.

Also unconfirmed is word that their manager terminated all 260 employees of the show, handing them plastic garbage bags and telling them "to pack up their personal stuff and get out". No word on any type of severance being offered yet.

Mentioned by announcers on another station was that the tiger in question was on stage for its very first time, was distracted by someone in the audience, and that Roy placed himself in between the tiger and its line of sight towards the person in the audience.

New Re: Haven't googled yet, but

The show booked a 1500 seat theater at ~$100/seat. That's $150,000 per show on a full house, presumably 300 shows a year. But a lot of high-priced asses in seats is lucrative. Granted, the staff for the show is large (260 crew for a two-man act), but you're still talking a lot of money.

The "first time in show" patter was just part of the act from what I've read. Nothing I've seen has suggested that the cat was actually debuting.

New Some info on the employees

Feldman said Mirage is working on a severance program for employees that he expected to be completed by week's end.

Mirage spokeswoman Jenn Michaels said, "The decision was made (to close the show) so they (employees) can protect themselves and their families," noting that workers are eligible for unemployment benefits.

"As we speak, our human resources department is developing a program to help place them in other positions. Cirque du Soleil is opening a show at the MGM Grand next summer and they hire technical people locally."

Also, Michaels said, Steve Wynn, former owner of the Mirage who contracted Siegfried & Roy to open the resort's showroom in 1990, "has stepped up to hire people from the show" for the opening of his Wynn Las Vegas in 2005.

Mark Riddell, spokesman for Feld Entertainment, the Virginia-based producers of the Siegfried & Roy show, said the company "well exceeded" its contractual arrangements with the show's dancers by paying them one week's severance pay and covering their medical benefits through the end of October.

"Each contract with the dancers is an individual contract with different provisions," Riddell said, noting that some may have gotten benefits that others did not, depending on the deals they negotiated.

"We are providing assistance to place them in our other productions," Riddell said, noting that Feld produces two units of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus and the "Disney on Ice" show.
