New Big Brother Lives and he is selling your info
I don't know what else to call those companies other than Big brother companies who track us and sell the info. What if they collected bogus info and it lands on our reports? I have a name shared by many others in this country, even found those with the same middle-ititial that I have. I also had people steal my identity before. Very easily their info could become part of mine. My father has the same name as mine, different initial, and credit companies and insurance companies always got us confused.

I've never been to jail, or to court, or been in trouble. I also pay my bills on time and hardly ever get a late fee unless the mail is late.

I thought of paying for a report on myself to see what comes up, but I haven't had the money to do so yet.

Too bad there isn't a way to opt-out on having your personal info sold.

My formulation is: big brother isn't watching, he's outsourcing.

While many of these services don't advertise an opt-out mechanism, there's nothing to stop you from writing them publicly to request an opt-out. Or visiting them in person (a team of imric, myself, and the Gryg brings a certain warmth to my heart). Or send a cease and desist letter. Or send one via an attorney. Or mail your local/state/national district attorney / attorney general, copied the firm.

I can assure you there are a number of people living in heavily coveted marketing zones who are highly effective at keeping their personal information just that -- personal. Their means for doing so is not unattainable to you or anyone else here

As a friend remarked last night: geeks tend to be awfully literally minded. We are used to a set of instructions, so long as legally formulated, to be processed by the computer. If we got a "go to hell" response we'd be quite surprised. This is a perfectly valid response to a legal or business challenge, howeever.

Boy I'd like to see those words on a PR banner behind [Treasury Secretary John] Snow at the podium:
