Came across this while posting an item in suggestions ..

Back in my last job we had been debating the growth of WAP (sometines called 2G) - my employer went in head first (HK Telecom). It hardly got off the ground. Then we started wondering about 3G (supposedly 2 megabit mobile phone & multimedia capability). That began to go sour when the prices for band licences got auctioned off in Europe & UK at extortionistic prices by the govts there - it was argued that some telecoms went to the wall over the amounts they had committed.

In HK, the company started setting up WiFi access points at coffee shops etc: & then last year sold of its Mobile Phone subsidiary.

In our area of the business we felt 3G was going to come to market too late & offer too little. WiFi started looking a better bet.

With the emergence of a strong standard in 802.11g at 54mb/sec and the cost of both access points & NIBs plummeting, WiFi is looking like it could live up to the above predictions.

It is a lot easier & nicer to use that 3G even if 3G roaming 'appears' to be more flexible. 3G speeds just don't look good up against WiFi & if enough business decide to get the WiFi 'hot-spots' set up & the technology keeps improving, it may be the preferable way to go wireless (802.11g is backward compatible with 802.11b).

Cheers

New We have to prey - or be preyed upon . .
. . but recent surveys have shown most wireless networks to be the rightful prey of any war driver who happens to pass by.
