I had two different hamsters when I was younger. First one was sweet, never bit me, would cuddle up and sleep in my bed with me in the morning and never wander off. Escaped the cage a few times, but always went back to the cage area.

Second one, was vicious. Bit me all the time. Chewed everything. Managed to get it's long front tooth stuck in one of the larger holes in the habitrail lid, and broke it off. Unfortunately, after that it couldn't eat and soon died.

However, wrote the habitrail company (at the suggestion of the vet) explained the problem. Was reimbursed for cost of hamster, sent a new lid with smaller holes, and told the entire system would be redesigned with smaller holes to prevent such broken teeth accidents in future.
