Welcome to IWETHEY!

New inherited an IRIX box at work
nice little workstation but root isnt known and a floppy boot disk is not available (no cdrom drive) I know linux will run but what is the best to install it. I can put a cdrom in my pc next to it and share it over the net (win2K svc pack 3) I could leave IRIX running and populate a partition with the contents of a linux cd then perhaps install via the partition or boot to a linux floppy then install via the network. Or I could break the root passwd as I dont think these work stations are that protected against known holes. Any suggestions? Exceed X emulator is killing my eyes.
thanx,
bill

New Should be as simple....
as doing bruteforce on passwd.

If I am not mistaken most IRIX installs do not have shadow installed (or even available to install)...

Standard passwd cracking progs should work just fine.

IRIX has some benefits on the hardware over Linux... it uses it a bit better.

I use Cygwin/Xfree86 from Windows for everything X related. Few little anomalies... but most are "Video Driver" related (read as nVidia).

Iffn you need a good sock it to me... lemme know. I can show thee thine way through the forest, tree by tree.

New RTFM, TUWTFYG

Read the fucking manual. Tell us what the fuck you've got.

\r\n\r\n

[link|http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/mips/install|Installing Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 For Mips]. Looks like you're going to want the TFTP or NFS boot methods, but you should read the [link|http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/mips/ch-rescue-boot.en.html|Booting the Installation System ] section. Another suggestion is [link|http://www.linux-mips.org/index.html|The Linux MIPS Project].

\r\n\r\n

I know this is hard for you, Box, but a modicum of specificity on the system you've got -- model, approximate manufacture date, version of Irix, memory, disk -- would be useful. I'm guesing an Octane, Indy, or O2, but that's coming straight out of /dev/ass.

\r\n\r\n

I'll also suggest you make liberal, but appropriate, use of the .,:;? and <shift> and <enter> keys on your next post if you expect a reply from me.

New Can it boot to singler user?
Boot to single user. If / is moutned as r/o, then remount as r/w.

Run passwd, change the root password.

Reboot.

That should get you in.

New broke in and got root, heres how
go to useradmin. Pick the login id of who you are logged in as. Edit the UID to be zero, it complains but does it anyway. Log out and log back in as user, you are now root privileged.

New naw, spent all day locking it down
it is an inside the dmz machine. Spent 4 hours configuring xwsh to auto pop with the fonts and colors I need for my tired eyes. Why the fuck dont they just have an .Xdefaults in your home instead of .chestrc
I dont know, but it does what I need it to do, get rid of hummingbird disease on Intel so I dont go blind. The machine is just a fancy terminal to a couple of HPUX machines I dink with.

Bill

I'm trying to figure out what the proportion of "friendliness" to "menace" is in that post.
