New Re: got the iPod
I got a little over-excited when it came out. I have the 30-gig model.

It is SUCH a shiznit!!!

Not only does it hold my music (6 gigs and growing), It is also my backup FireWire drive. So, there's 7 gig left.

New Confused
Music is at least 40% percent of my life. I have a digital piano. I make "living scores" from Beethoven - authentic performances coupled to a music display of the score in real time. I've received numerous emails from all over the world for the quality of the result. I have a CD collection of everything from Dowland to the Who to Jethro Tull to Joe Jackson to Neil Young. When I'm out, I don't need a radio, I use my head.

So what the hell is the attraction with putting mangled (ie ripped) music on a stupid PDA? This isn't music - it's MTV with a bad picture

Rant: stop

Understand: never

New Re: Confused
I don't know how much of a percentage music is in my life. I bet it's not even 40%. But I do have HUNDREDS of CD's. Of all genres.

Of these hundreds of CD's, I have roughly 60% in my iBook. I have "mangled" them (right now I used 128K AAC) but to my amateur ears, I can't tell the difference. It shows about 1350 songs right now, that would take 3.8 DAYS to play from start to finish.

Here's the wonder of the iPod. With those 1350 songs, I can take them ANYWHERE. I can set up playlists or have it go random. I love going random. I find a song that I didn't realize I had.

Some of my iPod-totin' friends are DJs. Guess what? The iPod is their favorite toy. They create playlists and then hook the iPod up to its Dock connector (which has a line in jack) and do their shows from it.

Most people didn't see the use of the cellular phone as well. But the biggest advantage to a cell phone is the same with the iPod: convenience.

I've got a hacked iopener with 20GB of MP3s(ripped from my CDs). Random play of my entire music collection is great.

New Nifty iTunes smart playlist trick
[Courtesy of [link|http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/wlg/3561|Derrick Story] ]

Create a smart playlist and call it something like "Unsung Heroes"

Use the following conditions:

Last Played is not in the last 30 days
Album does not contain Christmas
Genre is not Spoken Word

Limit to 50 songs selected by song name
Match only checked songs
Live updating

Viola! You now have a constantly changing playlist of tunes that you haven't listened to in a while for some variety. Set to Random and enjoy.

New Admittedly it's not for everyone
My main attraction to the iPod is for audio books. I used to get books on tape when I had long/frequent commutes. Now I load them on to the iPod and never have to change a cassette again.

It really made a difference when my wife and I drove from Denver to Chicago and back over the term break.

I've not seen any indication that would lead me to believe that I could say that.
