The Essential Question
Which movie do you prefer - Star Wars or Grease?
I prefer Grease. It's very remotely more plausible, has better music, and more girls.

Re: The Essential Question
Star Wars.
Grease just adds fuel to my theory that there are no good musicals.

No.
I hate musicals. And opera.
Act.
Or sing.

Then you better eliminate most of the classic Disney cartoons. They're basically musicals.

Guess you haven't seen...
This is Spinal Tap. Rocky Horror Picture Show. The Wall (actually an adult cartoon to music) Quadrophenia (The Who) Heavy Metal I would even almost count Almost Famous as a musical. (there are probably more, I just can't remember them right now)
Try some of those and see if you change your mind.
You're just looking for the cutsie musicals that all the women like.
Music Man Sound of Music Oklahoma Wizard of OZ etc.

Add: Hair Jesus Christ Superstar West Side Story Titanic The Musical Starlight Express (a broadway one) Yeah, not all musicals were done by Rodgers and Hammerstein, although they are good too!

Interesting
my wife and I watched Grease last night on VH1. Her first time watching it. Our son was staying over at Grandma's house and called to come home so we missed the middle part of the movie, came back and watched the ending. She liked it. I rather like Star Wars better, I like the action and special effects and music.

Tough call
Star Wars was more enjoyable and had more memorable lines.
But Olivia Newton John in skintight leather pants compared to Carrie Fisher with the cinamon bun hairdo - not even a debate. "Grease" hands down. (With the sound turned off, natch.)

Yeah, watch that sound.
Injured myself back in the day.
One of the catchier tunes from Grease was on the radio, and without concious thought, I began to sing along. I was fine doing the Olivia Newton John parts, but the transition to Travolta's key did bad things to my vocal system.
At the costume shop, we like Grease better. We rent and sell vast numbers of poodle skirts. Star Wars, well, not much. Since Episode II came out, we've had two calls for Star Wars related costumes: a Leia and a Luke. For actualy watching, Star Wars.
But not Episode II.
The Flash Gordon* movie with the Queen soundtrack is better than Episode II, even if you don't count the soundtrack. Ishtar is better than Episode II. Plan 9 From Outer Space ... no, now I'm exagerating.

Flash Gordon!
Now that was a cool movie.
Hokey, but cool for a pre-teen kid.
Emperor Ming was evil, his daughter was very hot.
I'd watch it again, just to see Ming's daughter.

I got to see Buster Crabbe in person in the late 1950's.
Besides the Flash Gordon role, he also played as Tarzan. He was at some kind of swimming event at the East Side Boy's Club in NYC. A couple of us followed him after he left, walking to the nearest subway station at 14th Street and First Avenue. At the time, it was amazing that he used the subway.

Of course I meant the 1980 version. I think I was a hormone charged teen at the time.
Max Van Sydow was Ming.
Brunettes always turned me on (I'm married to one), but two in one movie?

Max Von Sydow
Heh.. I suspect that few will associate [link|http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hc&id=1800022160&cf=biog&intl=us| Max] with Ming.. most with Ingmar Bergman flicks [12!] - but his repertoire is astounding: If he hasn't, he should write a book.
Ming's daughter? How about Liv Ullman.. and a few dozen others.

Yep, I have that very dialogue and then the music on one of my favorite cassette tapes, Ballads For An Owl (and I consider it a story, thus a ballad).

That's a *very* hard question!
Both movies are good escapism. Both have decent characters. Both are quality fantasy. Both are well directed and well photographed. Both made movie history. Both have many memorables scenes and lines. Both I will watch with little or no hesitation.
But if I'm forced to choose, I'll probably choose Star Wars. Because I prefer my fantasy a little more "exotic". :-)

Only one of those films is on the [link|http://www.afi.com/tv/movies.asp|AFI list of top 100 films]. Not that I would agree with American Film Institute's entire list, number 15 on that list is Star Wars.

Re: The Essential Question
I like Star Wars better as a movie. I consider Grease to be a musical, and I adore most musicals, so I'd have to say I like Grease better to sing, and Star Wars better to watch.
But I am also assuming that by "Star Wars" you mean the entire saga, not just one episode. Cause there were good and bad ones, and things that weren't as exciting as others in other ones. But overall I'd have to say Star Wars, cause I'm a Star Wars fan, have posters, books, movies, jewelry, T-shirts, puzzles, trading cards, figures and toys, etc.,(I collect), and even life size standups of Han and Anakin (the one from Episode 2).
Whereas on Grease, all I have are the books, movie, and soundtrack... oh, and a poster. ;)

I like them both for different reasons....
Grease was cute. And Olivia Newton John could sing! But not John Travolta.
Star Wars was cool, great special effects for the time, but Tron was better.
Star Wars Empire Strikes Back was better. Episode I and II, I felt were more "divided" trying to tell an adult story, but keep kids happy (with Jar Jar Binks and the kid) at the same time. But the rise the Emperor was the part I like from Ep. 1 and 2.
