Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Yeah, so post 9/11 . . .
. . they're less interested in things that could actually blow up a plane, and more interested in things that will delay you long enough to convince you that "Republicans are protecting you". Some nitwit tried a shoe bomb, so shoe bombs is it now.

Before 9/11 (and post Locerbie) they were interested in notebook computers actually working. So now it's sandles. Basically, anything that will make it difficult for you to get on the plane is just fine. If anyone actually wants to get a bomb on board, they're going to get a bombo on board. This is all just for show.

So a plane is going to get blown up and a scapegoat will be named. "Fred Pufooknik failed to ask an 86 year old grandmother to turn on her notebook even though she was not wearing a head scarf so was obviously a Near Eastern operative in disguise".

Pffffffft.

New True enough.
Pre 9/11, I remember having to demonstrate functionality on my cell phone countless times, not once since.

Airport security is a joke. On my last trip (Louisville, KY, 2wks ago) I discovered that I'd left a box knife in my laptop bag. AFTER I returned home, and AFTER having gone through security at both Lousiville and O'Hare. You know, one of those plastic jobs that's about 3" long with the extendable break-off blade sections. It was in the compartment with my cell phone.

The point is, the weapons used in 9/11 could still relatively easily be smuggled aboard an aircraft. I doubt that an attack of that style could succeed now, however. Not because of airport security, but because the passengers wouldn't tolerate it.
