Easy - gas fumes can become explosive even when you can hardly smell them. Also, gasoline fumes can accumulate at the floor because they are way heavier than air (high vapor density). You might have a dense low layer of gas fumes and smell nothing extreme at sitting level. Also, after smelling something constantly, your nose becomes saturated and you may not realize that the fumes are building up.
