New Probably 82845G Brookdale chipset
I just put Debian on one of those at work and ran into the same problem. Peter's suggestion is correct. Support for that chipset only exists in XFree86 4.3
New It is...
Newsgroups I've looked at appear to tell me that the system thinks the chip has only 1 meg of memory, even though it usuallly supports 8meg to 16meg.

Apparently, there's some obscure option on setup that makes the 8meg visible.

Gotta find it!

New Why is this working with Knoppix 3.1, then?
I downloaded it when I downloaded debian a few months ago.

Surely, Knoppix 3.1 isn't on an experimental version of XFree?

Knoppix is on experimental versions of just about everything :)

New Knoppix packages, system-info

Knoppix is highly tuned regards to packages. Though it uses Debian's infrastructure (apt-get, packaging, various sources, etc.), it begs, borrows, and steals heavily from a wide range of sources. You'd want to check the /var/lib/dpkg/status file in your Knoppix system to see what specific versions of packages are installed. Wouldn't suprise me to find Klaus is installing his own source builds where he sees the need.

Regards your configuration -- I'd recommend running the [link|http://twiki.iwethey.org/Main/LinuxSystemInfo|system-info] script I've written, which does a good job of abstracting out system configuration. It doesn't capture X-specific details (hmm...should probably add this), but will note kernel config, modules, IRQs, and IO settings, which can be a major part of configuration issues in many cases.

Confirmed. I had the Intel 830 and 845 listed as the current "problem chipsets" for XFree86 in 2002: [link|http://linuxmafia.com/~rick/linux-info/help-resources|http://linuxmafia.com/~rick/linux-info/help-resources].

Note the hyperlinks to [link|http://lpn.rnbhq.org/R31/R31.shtml|http://lpn.rnbhq.org/R31/R31.shtml] and thus to [link|http://www.xfree86.org/~dawes/845driver.html|http://www.xfree86.org/~dawes/845driver.html]. As the page clarifies, Dawes's patch got merged into the 4.3.0 release. Note the instructions for 2.4.19 or later kernels.

Me, I'd just not use poxy, fussy, RAM-stealing, motherboard-integrated video chipsets in the first place. That's what the box of aging, leftover but still respectable, PCI video cards in the garage are for.
