Re: Debian Question
Consider using the experimental XFree86 4.3 packages from this deb source:
deb ftp://ftp.skolelinux.no/debian-unofficial/x4.3/sid/i386/ ./
What branch are you running? The XFree86 in stable is really, really old.
Edit: Disable link conversion for easy cut'n'paste.

Re: Debian Question
Running stable.
I've been spelunking and it appears that the agpgart driver won't load. That appears to be the fundamental problem.
When I get to the X startup, it says "no screen".
I've been using Knoppix 3.1 to look at something "that works" on this machine, and trying to get the options and such from that on agpgart. But that didn't work either.
Funny thing, I can't even load the minimum X VGA driver.

Probably 82845G Brookdale chipset
I just put Debian on one of those at work and ran into the same problem. Peter's suggestion is correct. Support for that chipset only exists in XFree86 4.3

It is...
Newsgroups I've looked at appear to tell me that the system thinks the chip has only 1 meg of memory, even though it usuallly supports 8meg to 16meg.
Apparently, there's some obscure option on setup that makes the 8meg visible.
Gotta find it!

Why is this working with Knoppix 3.1, then?
I downloaded it when I downloaded debian a few months ago.
Surely, Knoppix 3.1 isn't on an experimental version of XFree?

Knoppix is on experimental versions of just about everything :)

Knoppix packages, system-info
Knoppix is highly tuned regards to packages. Though it uses Debian's infrastructure (apt-get, packaging, various sources, etc.), it begs, borrows, and steals heavily from a wide range of sources. You'd want to check the /var/lib/dpkg/status file in your Knoppix system to see what specific versions of packages are installed. Wouldn't suprise me to find Klaus is installing his own source builds where he sees the need. \r\n\r\n Regards your configuration -- I'd recommend running the [link|http://twiki.iwethey.org/Main/LinuxSystemInfo|system-info] script I've written, which does a good job of abstracting out system configuration. It doesn't capture X-specific details (hmm...should probably add this), but will note kernel config, modules, IRQs, and IO settings, which can be a major part of configuration issues in many cases. \r\n

Confirmed. I had the Intel 830 and 845 listed as the current "problem chipsets" for XFree86 in 2002: [link|http://linuxmafia.com/~rick/linux-info/help-resources|http://linuxmafia.com/~rick/linux-info/help-resources].
Note the hyperlinks to [link|http://lpn.rnbhq.org/R31/R31.shtml|http://lpn.rnbhq.org/R31/R31.shtml] and thus to [link|http://www.xfree86.org/~dawes/845driver.html|http://www.xfree86.org/~dawes/845driver.html]. As the page clarifies, Dawes's patch got merged into the 4.3.0 release. Note the instructions for 2.4.19 or later kernels.
Me, I'd just not use poxy, fussy, RAM-stealing, motherboard-integrated video chipsets in the first place. That's what the box of aging, leftover but still respectable, PCI video cards in the garage are for.

Now working - well, sort of
I downloaded the XFree86 4.3.0 version from xfree86.org. Peter, the site you provided was hanging on the downloads.
Now, after a reboot, it gets the GDM up just fine in 800x600 (my default working mode).
However, when I shut it down and try to restart, it just blanks my screen.
I can Ctl-Alt-Backspace and go back to text mode.
I know it's experimental, so I guess I'll just report the problem to the XFree86.org guys.
At least it is starting in the right video modes.

.debs are available
[link|http://people.debian.org/~mmagallo/packages/xfree86/i386/|http://people.debian...ges/xfree86/i386/]
These work fine on the i845G box at work.
One more thing to try: if you turned the framebuffer on, see what happens with it off. Some gfx chips simply don't like it.
