New Linux PDA grows up (aspires to be Sony PCG-UM3)

This is looking very good. It doesn't match the Sony at 1024 x 768 but it is getting there and it runs Sharp's Linux.

These PCs may well take on the role that newer non-PALM PDAs promised but haven't fulfilled.

New sweet!
New On Linux PDAs
We've got a Sharp Zaurus at work that is intended to be a target platform for a engineer's terminal onto our systems to save engineers from having to scale 20M variable message sign gantries with a laptop in tow; naturally, I've taken the opportunity of having a play with it :-)

The hidden keyboard is a great idea, and the interface is nice; getting a shell on a handheld was an odd notion.

The feature set is broad; possibly broader than that which you get with PPC-based devices. Of course, given that we need this thing to run a single app, it's not something we're too concerned with.

From a build quality point of view (and, given the task we need this device to do, it's something we care about) it's well built and exceeded my expectations. iPaqs look nice (and so they should, given the cost) but aren't actually built too well. The screens in particular degrade over time, becoming unresponsive to the stylus, and the cradle is a cheap and nasty piece of tacky plastic. My smartphone has a better cradle(!).

I like the Zaurus; it's well priced, well specified, and has a nice software environment that's friendly to developer and user alike. We'll see how this pans out in reality when we give one to a hairy-arsed engineer up a gantry in a British November rainstorm :-)

New Re: On Linux PDAs

The Sharp Zarus SL-5500 was probably my fav - I got a new one via e-bay about 18 months back & had it delivered to Ashton who for the effort of forwarding it to me in HK when I was there, got to play with it.

Unfortunately the SD card slot stopped working within 3 months despite the fact that I hardly even touched the thing. It has a CF slot & that works fine. I have been thinking about getting it fixed but I have to return it to US :-(

It ran a Linksys Wi-Fi card simply by plugging it in & the configuration was a delight (compared to the appaling mess that iPaq's Win2002 is for configuring network devices & modems. The iPaq looks nice but the Zaurus screen is so crisp & like you say the keyboard is niffty & pleasant to use.

The Opera browser on the Zaurus was much nicer than the limited feat IPaq one & better than anything I could get on my PALM PDAs.

That new Zaurus des look like it would give new meaning to the browsing experience on PDAs.

Cheers

Doug
