Welcome to IWETHEY!

New We were on the news on Saturday
A local TV station was doing a story about how everybody is going to be wearing patriotic costumes this Halloween. They chose my wife's shop as the place to get the story.

They interviewed my wife. Lots of questions, but the main one was "are you getting a lot of demand for patriotic-themed costumes so far?" Answer: "A little, not much."

They interviewed some customers. "Are you wearing a patriotic-themed costume this year?" "Probably not."

So, of course, the story was that the hot costumes this year are all patriotic themes. I've had the impression for a while that news stories on TV are written before the interviews, and this, in my mind, confirms it. I think they picked up a few details, but the main point was decided already, and the lack of supporting evidence didn't change it.

And we aren't about to complain - we got several minutes worth of free publicity with the name of the shop repeated several times, and we think we may have become the default costume-shop for that station whenever they need a costume shop quote or picture. Notice that the name of the shop does not appear in this post, in order to avoid potential googling.

They asked if we had any Osama Bin Laden masks - and of course we don't. We wouldn't if they were available. I called a mask supplier while they were there, and the supplier didn't carry them. The guy on the phone didn't know if they would be carrying them in the future. The line on the news that night sounded pretty definitive about the ObL mask not being produced, but I'm pretty sure I was the only source on that.

I will say this for them: Kim had a point she wanted to make, that she will not provide costumes that could be worn to make fun of Musims or Arabs because we are about fun, not hate. And they aired her saying that.

New Heard a similar story on the AM station this morning
And yes, the story said that Uncle Sam, Lady Liberty, and similar patriotic costume sales were up markedly this year.

As Paul Harvey would say, "And now you know.... the REST of the story!"

New Mask suggestion
While no one has yet been able to overestimate the tastelessness of certain wackos to be found everywhere:

How about a mask which is a virtually-blank face? (mere limned outlines of the usual things you see on faces). The 'enemy' all the troops are massing to 'fight' is:

anonymous, nameless, faceless men - many intentionally not known to each other for obvious reasons. (So much for the vaunted 'face recongition' software- apparently terminally inaccurate, last I read).

{sigh}

Glad your small venture might start to pay the overhead; can only applaud your position re bashing unMurican (??) looking physiognomies - and that you managed to get that point across! Some folk are still amenable to shame. Not enough of course - but some..

Cheers,

Ashton

PS - bin-L depicted in mufti, his Murican disguise for field trips into the land of Contributions:

Cleanshaven - maybe Hitler moustache?! Afro, beads, tie-dyed shirt and Mother + Rolling Stones tattoo - same face. Maybe gold stud in nose and lower lip.

(theme? the utter banality of evil)

Umm.. never mind :[ Sure to be misunderstood. Too.

Although: T-shirt with bin-L AND Pat Robertson, Foulwell side by side ??? I might wear one of those.. Need an L.

New T-shirt
I suspect that shirt already exists.

If not, I might make it, but not through the store.

New It's an old problem...
Hi Mike,

I've had the impression for a while that news stories on TV are written before the interviews, and this, in my mind, confirms it. I think they picked up a few details, but the main point was decided already, and the lack of supporting evidence didn't change it.

Reporters have to be able to sell their stories to their editors to get air time and column inches. A "sensational" story is easier to sell than one which reports nothing much happened.

For another example, compare participant reports (peaceful except for a few anarchists, only about 20-30 counter-protesters, etc.) with [link|http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A46766-2001Sep29.html| press stories] about the peace rallies in Washington DC this weekend. TV reports about the rallies were far more biased.

You can't forget that marketing is at work in news stories too...

Cheers,
Scott.

She has not, incidentally, allowed this episode to turn her into an anti-cucumber crusader.
