House of Lords, mainly. The upper house is much less partisan than the Commons and despite its unelected nature (which I, of course, despise) actually does a decent job of reining in the excesses of whatever party sits to the Speaker's right at the time.

There is separation between legislative and executive, as there is in the USA. Laws passed in Parliament are subject to judicial review to make sure they're actually legal.

Oh, and the most vicious press in the world :-)

And no you are right, the BBC is something MOST Muricans can't comprehend.

For that matter... the NYT isn't something MOST Muricans can comprehend either.

The system (any system) always works

There are always checks and balances.

If they are within the intentional system, they are messy and inefficient. Like the President and Congress most of the time.

If they are outside the intentional system, they are not so nice. As Ceaucescu and the French Monarchy would have learned at the end if they had any real capacity for learning, not that it matters much that late in the game.
