New Here comes Jesse Jackson
Jesse Jackson may be going to meet the leaders of the Taliban. Do you think this is a good idea or a bad one? [link|http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A35554-2001Sep27.html|http://www.washingt...01Sep27.html]
New Well, he did liberate those POWs in Bosnia.
At least it looked that way.

And he's been to lots of other countries and gotten on TV and stuff.

New Bad idea
Makes the US look soft if we are willing to talk it over. Also hamstrings any military action. Do you think we'll be able to take the moral high ground if we attack while Jackson is in the middle of 'negotiations'?

This is probably the reason why they invited him in the first place. The Taliban's mind set: Stall, stall, stall, until winter sets in. Then by the spring the US won't have political will to send the troops in - game over.

New Political stall ploy
My Prediction: Taliban will release the missionaries currently incarcerated to Jackson. They'll look like they are willing to discuss, Jackson will look like a hero, and we'll still be right where we are today, except ObL will have had more time to plot his next move and possibly flee Afghanistan.

New Re: He is just too naive & opportunistic - misses the plot

chances are he goes to Afghanistan - is feted, wined (hmmm maybe whined) & dined. Gets told that they want him to meet a full council of the mullahs. They all gather (time keeps passing) they talk for a week - say they want to release the 8 on trial as a goodwill gesture - Jesse is whined & dined for another week. Mullahs agree to release the 8 in another 2 weeks time etc: etc: etc:

US tv spends time filming JJ & moving away from the real issues.

JJ is just too much of a loose cannon even if he has no balls

New Re: Here comes Jesse Jackson
I think if we can keep television cameras out of Afghanistan, Jesse will find he isn't so hot to get there.

But that's probably impossible. We ought see if we cannot use it to our advantage. Take it as writ that he will go, send some spies in along with him. He's clueless and will never know the difference. Meanwhile, attempt to make sure most of the Taliban Big Shots come to greet him. Then...ummm...send in the Marines to help with the questioning. If Jesse happens to take one in the butt for Democracy, we should all promise to feel right proud.
