New US troops head for Liberia
[link|http://news.ft.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=FT.com/StoryFT/FullStory&c=StoryFT&cid=1054966110968&p=1012571727088|Financial Times]
A US marine expeditionary force was heading for the strife-riven west African state of Liberia on Friday night after Washington came under increased pressure to deploy troops in what would be its biggest military engagement in Africa since the early 1990s.

The USS Kearsarge, carrying 1,800 marines, 1,200 sailors and attack helicopters, was diverted on its homeward voyage from Iraq to prepare for the possible evacuation of civilians from Liberia where rebel fighters have reached the edge of the capital, Monrovia.

I bet those are some happy marines.

The part I found interesting is this.
There is resistance in the Bush administration to the idea of the US being co-opted as a global policeman, especially in a region where it has no clear strategic interest. Many Republicans severely criticised the Clinton administration for its entanglement in Somalia.

I would love to know who was behind that resistance. The phrase 'strategic interest' says it's part of the neocon group, but that covers much of the current White House. It does show the farce of the 'Saddam had to go because he was a bad man' excuse the White House has been pushing recently.

New I'm dizzy. And the spin hasn't even started.
New Talk about spin...

Wasn't it Bush I who got us into there in the first place?
They say a city in the desert lies/ The vanity of an ancient king/ But the city lies in broken pieces/ Where the wind howls and the vultures sing/ These are the works of man/ This is the sum of our ambition...
New It's not like we haven't been there before

New It's all simple really.
French helicopters last week evacuated Americans and Europeans while Liberians braced for a bloodbath.

W simply cannot have those cowardly French rescuing Americans.

"Passionate hatred can give meaning and purpose to an empty life." -- Eric Hoffer
New I'll guess Colin Powell.
It's his modus operandi. Never met a problem he didn't think could be solved by endless diplomacy.

Back in 1980 Liberia was a wealthy (for that region) and peaceful (again, for that region) country, a democracy launched on its way by the American Colonization Society, which consisted of Americans. But we can't have that, can we? So there was a rebellion.

Yes, we really should clean up sub-Saharan Africa. Lord knows the UN, France and the old Soviet Union didn't do too well with the region. It was a mess when they found it, so they made it a worse mess, even messing up the parts that weren't so much of a mess. And the UN and France are still screwing it up.

So much unfinished business. But hey, I never voted for the guys who left it unfinished. I never voted for Dubya either, but I'll catch him next time around.

So, Mr. Whysall, you gonna berate us Yanks for not having done anything about this now, so you can whine and complain about a "clusterfuck" as soon as we go in in force? We all know how you love to have it both ways.

DEAL WITH IT.
Never mind all the mass graves. Where's the nerve gas?
I helped depose Saddam. Did you?

New Re: I'll guess Colin Powell.
"Clean up".

HAHAHAHAHAHA

Yeah, you're gonna clean up Africa. You're gonna succeed where every single intervention ever has failed. You did a GRAND job in Mogadishu. But hey, you got to make a "shootin' brown people" film about it. Everybody wins!

After all, your track record speaks for itself!

Central America sure got cleaned up! Afghanistan sure got cleaned up! Vietnam sure got cleaned up! Iraq's a boomtown, rosy as anything! The war's over! Oops.

You've got some funny metrics for "success", is all I can say.

And one more thing. *You* aren't going to do jack shit except sit on your fat arse posting to this website.

New Who did a grand job in Mogadishu?
As I recall, that was on Clinton's watch. And in conjunction with the UN.

Neither of these are going to be in the way in the future. And when they're not in the way, we most certainly [link|http://worldwar2history.info/|clean up other people's messes].

I'm sorry your blind unreasoning hatred of America has made you so bitter. I hope you get over it soon, for your own happiness and mental health.

Meanwhile, we're going to keep knocking out the murderous thugocrats of the world, one at a time. If Dubya gets a second term, or if we finally blow off the UN for good, we may just get around to all of them. Wouldn't that be nice?

I said, wouldn't that be nice?

By the way, about those one thousand French troops in the Congo. It seems [link|http://www.themilitant.com/2003/6720/672021.html|there's no pleasing some people]. Wow. It's not every day you hear someone arguing that a thousand troops is too many. But predictably, they manage to blame the US for it all somehow. Friends of yours, perhaps? Anti-Americanism indeed transcends logic, or even ideological consistency.

Anyone can say "we never liked X anyway" after he's deposed. They do it often enough with X==Saddam around here. [link|http://www.judicialwatch.org/help.shtml|Come lend a hand when it matters.]

One of these days (this year!) I'm gonna set up my own anti-Ashcroft page, if he doesn't get booted first. But I've got [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=107288|some stuff to sort out first].
