Slave reparations anyone? A new view
[link|http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/162/nation/Reparations_case_lawyers_say_man_was_enslaved_till_1960s+.shtml|http://www.boston.co...till_1960s+.shtml] Lawyers seeking reparations for African-American descendants of slaves say they have located a 104-year-old man in rural Louisiana who says that he and his children were enslaved throughout much of the 20th Century and even during the civil rights movement of the 1960s. reading the entire account, if true, would entitle this man and his family to reparations from both society and the transgressors. It also brings up how often did this happen, symbiotic relationships in rural areas etc. thanx, bill

why from society?
If somebody rips you off, you take them to court - society doesn't pay you back for what you lost.

so society has no responsibility to those governed?
if there was a elected government in that area, and knew the situation and did nothing are they not culpable in some respect? On squad cars you often see the phrase "to protect and serve" who are they refering to? thanx, bill

The lawsuit is not against the neighbors
The lawsuit is not against the mis, mal or non-feasance of local law enforcement agents. Although the assertions are predicated on the ill-behaved neighbors, these neighbors are not being asked to be held liable for their actions.
Instead, some court way up North is being asked to compensate these victims via taxpayer dollars - without respect to whether said taxpayers were involved in the crime.

The local police are not "society".
If they knew of illegal activity and did nothing, they are subject to lawsuit. The cost of settlement may fall upon local "society" since they are the taxpayers who support the local government agencies, unless culpability can be isolated to individuals.
"Society" turns out to have very imperfect control of elected officials (who control the hired ones), because elected officials control the machinery of election.

Why do they need permission to take a deposition?
Just do it. Get however many witnesses it takes, get a videotaped deposition, then worry about getting it entered as evidence in the case.

Imagine if all who were demolished by HUAC
*could* sue 'HUAC' - The Reps of the Murican Peepul du jour.
Or.. if, after the current madness is sorted out: a Treason indictment were even Thinkable: of Messrs Bush, Rove! Cheney, Wolfowitz, Perle, [OK - whole Cabinet] -- and throw in Kristol as bat-boy.
Or.. the Senators who reduced Impeachment to: a personal proclivity involving consensual sex between adults, for the manifest naked political purpose of ejecting an (actually) Elected President.
Or.. The CIEIOs of some X% of Murican Corporate Rule - for fraud against the stockholders, employees and suppliers left unpaid via massive manipulations (via the Old Boys Club) of most of the Wealth of [This] Nation[s] -- mocking Adam Smith and all successors.
{sigh}
Isn't That WHY - Murica graduates 10X as many lawyers as engineers? The Suit-Capital of the World. So let's make lemonade out of this sour Fact about US.
There are a hundredthousand more suits for Suits out there. No Guts. (goes with Dumbth like a Horse & Carriage) We're merely All Talk about them vaunted 'Constitutional Principles' - evidenced by the ennui, as these principles are nullified each day by this post- coup d'etat Regime.
