Committment to Linux suicidal?
Had a meeting with the suits from the CPA firm - they have the owner's ear. Subject of backend servers came up - basically, they started behaving like MS-pushing suits, and I just lost it internally - kept my up front demeanor in the realm of the technical and the cost of licensing.
After the meeting - slimy people these suits - they retreated to a back office and began the suit-whispering behavior that I've seen so many times. I thought I was finished with these slimy, immoral fucks, but I guess not.
I have a strong feeling my days here are numbered. The owner DOES trust me completely, so he may listen to me over them. We'll see.
If ANYONE has detailed knowledge of AppGen or knows where I can get it (cost, functionality), PLEASE tell me now so I'll have more ammunition to fight off the Borg.
God almighty I despise Microsoft.

Of course
GPS buys Solomon - MS buys GPS - MS buys other small players - MS "supports" them while forcing everyone to SQL server - MS announces "Microsoft Accounting" and lo and behold, all competition is gone and the final product bears no resemblance to the victims of their acquisitiveness - they've leveraged one monopoly to create another.
That's illegal - but it doesn't matter, because the world is operated by drones and equally immoral people.
If your primary motivation is to act well and justly, you are screwed. This was formerly known as "nice guys finish last".

You need to play open minded
Really. It sucks. It's painful. You KNOW you are lying when you say you are willing to give it a chance. And you might HAVE to accept some parts of the Borg in order to lock it out of other parts.
But think about the flip side.
You get branded as someone impossible to "reason" with (yes, I know they are not reasoning when they lie to you, but you have to pretend that they believe they are telling the truth and then test it out, even when you know the test is a waste of time).
People who are impossible to reason with are excluded from decision making, which then means it ALL goes to M$.
So NEVER let ANYONE (even your boss!!!!) see you recoil in horror when the subject of the Borg come up. Or they have already won.

Re: Committment to Linux suicidal?
Damn, Ross... Seems to me you've got the props to methodically demolish this seductive behaviour; surely Your Suits know how *They* work the field to peddle stuff -- Really.. is it so impossible to point out the fact of their being scammed precisely the same way (only maybe with a bit more lubricant by real Pros in sleaze) ??
Anyway, you've a much more than decent command of Engrish and apparently, the ability to not give in to understandable anger. Just once in a while the slime needs to be coagulated into mere scum; hope you get yer \ufffd bullet \ufffd points across in fine style.
How about the (to my amateur ears anyway) Major Point, as someone has remade in a beautiful one-line sig, which I can't find:
In what format is All Your Data stored? Who *owns* (and regularly changes) that proprietary data format? Do you see a trend here, for any future of arbitrary s/ware cost increases? Can [this company] afford the loss of all its records to a next format change, possibly / likely demanding that All Your Records shall reside on "the web" on a M/Soft server somewhere? .nyet and all one can say already about that?
I'll presume that such matters as maintenance, reboot costs, weekly patching of vulnerabilities: has already gone Zoom.
Sheesh! this entire madness, especially to an outsider: is as grotesque as the political / international chaos the same myopic Suited-class are wreaking everywhere. Is no one in bizness capable of remotely original thought, even in self-defense?
Sympathies,
Ashton

Words from the SF Katt: "Ich bin ein Penguiner."
Don't know why I happpened to look here, where I have not been in months. But, at this [link|http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,3959,1120052,00.asp|link]: At a panel discussion among several of Redmond's enterprise customers, Flessner's day only got worse. How did it feel to get hit by the SQL Slammer worm? A rep from Merrill Lynch's technology group described it as "falling into the category of sucks." A Continental Airlines IT exec said the company's CEO told its CIO that the worm had torpedoed Continental's business plan.
At a dinner that evening, the Kitty overheard Flessner acknowledge what had been common knowledge for some time, that "it was completely our fault. The patch we issued to fix the SQL flaw before the attack had no installer. All patches now come with an installer." Flessner's Monday from hell continued during the dinner, when he met an enterprise customer who claimed that Microsoft just lost a potential deal with his company\ufffdthat had been hashed over for eight months\ufffdbecause of pricing issues. "Me-ouch." and [link|http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,3959,1113300,00.asp|this] "Ich bin ein Penguiner," caterwauled Herr Katze from the wall of Building 34 of Microsoft's Redmond campus before security guards chased the fantasizing Feline from the property. SFK had thought his JFK impression would stir up more ire from the Redmondites than it did, considering recent reports that the burgermeisters of the German city of Munich will be dropping about 30 million euros to dump Windows and migrate to Linux. You've got to love "Ich bin ein Penguiner."!

No wonder the airline industry is failing
A Continental Airlines IT exec said the company's CEO told its CIO that the worm had torpedoed Continental's business plan. Any business plan that relies on a heterogeneous environment, and a Microsoft one at that, has more serious problems than just the integrity of that environment. It's like the LRPD says: If I'm planning on doing something that stupid, strong typing is the least of my worries. You would think an airline's business plan should depend on ... oh, I don't know ... how about air travel? Someone's got a great commercial out where the CEO is in a meeting asking what we're here to talk about, "The server upgrade? ... The email migration? ... The connectivity issues? ... " "No, shirts. Remember? We make shirts." Continental's CEO should pay attention. Make business decisions, and let the IT people handle the implementation.
