Anyway, computer jobs in infrastructure combined with programming skills, social skills, and integration skills will be in demand - esp. Samba knowledge. So hop to it. A very strange thing has happened. The local machine is so powerful that we now have a server-client environment, in which this one crippled overpriced machine dominates an array of pitiful handmedowns. My shit is all new. IBM x225 which is very busy, and spends a minimal amount of time on my "clients", which are Thinkpads and NetVistas - let them print, let them share. I am busy. It's got this cool green SuSE sticker. SMP TOP is the very bomb. My network is shaping up. UNIX is winning, but I want my users to use, so they get Windows XP - and it is nice for them. They have 40g local storage and I am going to leverage this somehow for a traditional function. I have no faith in LVMs, this is a case by case thing. More stores are going in, off to KC for the next leg of my 1-man w/lan. Don't forget about the social skills. -drl

I keep to myself and only talk to other people when it involves work. I don't schmooz around to win brownie points or bootlick like most people do. Basically this irritates people and they form alliances against me, labeling me as antisocial because I don't go to happy hour with them and get drunk on Fridays after work. I get stressed out too easy, especially when overworked or on a tight deadline or given a project and minimual information on what it is supposed to do. I freeze up, take my time, and get lost easily when stressed out. I have an income, no job, disability which pays peanuts and my wife's salary. I spent the last six months without an income. It isn't much, so no wish list. Not unless I save up over years for it, or end up going back to work. *"If you're going to cheat, cheat fair. As for saving - a buddy in Denver lived in his van for 9 years before buying a house - with cash. He made about 12 bucks an hour as a guard. He was phenomenally cheap but to a good purpose, and was otherwise a good guy. -drl

I am social and outgoing. I definately do not schmooz or bootlick, but I try like hell to make friends in the workplace. I have to spend more time at work than at home (minus the sleeping) so I try to enjoy the workplace. It's much easier to form friendships if you can find common ground with folks at work. If you share an interest in playing guitars or golf or watching bad tv, it's not necessarily schmoozing to talk to people. When you get your next position, try it. You have an opportunity to reinvent the "work you" each time you get a new job. Why not bring an outgoing Norman to your next position. Try it out, if it don't work, then go back to keeping to yourself. Just a few thoughts, Screamer But take your time, think a lot, Why, think of everything you've got.
