New The "approved" virus?
I've been getting strange emails all day... 81 k files with attachments... Title says "approved", body says "see attached file", attached file is called approved.pif.

Now I'm pretty sure pif is some kind of executable or resource file, and I'm pretty sure it's a virus. But it's odd, because I've not heard anything about this one. Anyone else getting it?

New Just received it here - pointed it out to wife

She had her notebook infected a year or two back when an email with a *.pif arrived.

The one I got was same as described ...

Re your application

(had been applying for positions) but as soon as I saw the words 'see attached file' pointed it out to wife as a probable virus.

She is pretty good these days & although she has an Apple iBook & really doesn't have to worry, she now deltes email unless it is on a topic she is expecting or from a friend & won't open attachments unless it was expected.

Cheers Doug

New re: pif
Weren't .PIF files used during 'doze 3.1 days to execute DOS apps or am I experiencing brain fade?
New Correct. Your brain is still bright and shiny. :-)
New Still used
I still find PIF files on my Windows 98 hard drive. Check out DOSPRMT.PIF in the C:\\WINDOWS\\ directory. It contains the settings for the MS-DOS Prompt when COMMAND.COM gets loaded in Windows 98.

New A little more to it
In OSes with vm86 support, allows use of expanded memory etc.

An extremely poor man's version of OS/2 DOS box configuration.
