Futurama Season 1 DVD set
I've always been a fan of the show and when the set came out, I picked it up as soon as I got a chance.
Great stuff:
- All the episodes are uncut, of course. When you watch it in syndication on Cartoon Network, there are bits cut out and even censored. (For example, the Professor exclaiming "Great Zombie Jesus!" was bleeped by the network.)
- Commentaries. I love audio commentaries on DVDs. (To be fair, my wife hates them.) To my delight, every single one of these episodes has a commentary track and they're as funny as the episodes themselves. (John DiMaggio, the voice of Bender, has a very infectious[1] laugh in real life.)
- All sorts of extras, from animatics to deleted scenes, storyboards and featurettes. Even the packaging has lots of great art and sight gags.
- DVD is a great format for this series, as the visual humor is very dense so you'll find yourself pausing and examining still frames to see the gags crammed into every scene.
If you're a fan of the show, this is a great value and provides hours of fun. The price is right, too. Amazon has it at US$29.99.
Season 2 comes out next month. I can hardly wait.
NOTE: This refers to the Region 1 set. The Region 2 set was available about a year earlier and may have different features.
[1] Not as disgusting as it sounds.
CORRECTION: Season 2, it turns out, is not currently scheduled to be released.
