New What to do on a rainy weekend.
[link|http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph?mode_u=off&mode_w=on&site=www.bepatient.net&submit=Examine|Why rebuild my server of course].

5 years of dust accumulation is an amazing site. I believe the dust bunnies had indeed been copulating inside this machine.

Add one more debian box to the tally...and take one Redhat off.

New Re: What to do on a rainy weekend.
I had a machine that was literally blackened inside from the shop dust here. I borrowed the compressed air gun-sprayer handle and hooked it up to the industrial strength compressed air supply (sort of like can-o'-air but with a firehose instead of a needle). A huge grey-brown cloud came out of the machine, out of every hole - the power supply, the CDROM, the processor fan - looked like it exploded. After a few heavy blasts it was clean as a whistle. I could not believe that much dust could accumulate in anything.

New Didn't rain here, but I did my own server work:
Reluctantly took Apache2 off my Debian box, in favor of 1.3something. It was just too hard to maintain, not having any packages (that work) ready for it yet. My advice: Apache2 is ready for prime-time, but only if you're ready to devote prime time to it. Kinda like owning a Delorean--you end up becoming a mechanic.

New I see no point to Apache 2 as of yet.
Kinda like BeOS: better technically, but with no software. :-)

New Just found one reason:
It's not an issue for me yet, but someone on the mod_python list found out Apache 1.3 is not thread-safe, so if you want threads in mod_python, you need to be running Apache 2.

New I was going to post something like that.
But I forgot to come back... We found that a threaded PHP module serves more pages noticeably faster in Apache 2 than in Apache 1. We didn't do any tests, but the difference was something like 30%.

New Huh? Just go to any Volvo garage; they use the same parts.
At least as far as the engine is concerned, that is -- Volvo is probably your best bet in the USA, to get the old "PRV"[*] V6 serviced. ([*]: "Peugeot-Renault-Volvo", a cooperative project from the early seventies that got this Gang Of Three an upper-scale engine for their respective "luxury" models -- the Volvo 264, the Peugeot 604 and the Renault 30 -- cheaper than if each had built one on their own.)

The running gear might be a bit harder, of course (unless you live in western Europe), but Renault garages should be able to get most of the parts for you -- the DeLorean used pretty much the same bits as the Renault Alpine A310, IIRC. (And thus probably the same as that other French mid-engined V6 coupe', the MVS Venturi.)

Your lies are of Microsoftian Scale and boring to boot. Your 'depression' may be the closest you ever come to recognizing truth: you have no 'inferiority complex', you are inferior - and something inside you recognizes this. - [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=71575|Ashton Brown]
New The cig machine.
It's what I call this thing that was brought into my shop back when I was working as a technician in a small computer store no longer in business. The individual REEKED of cigarette smoke, and his computer did too. Complained the CD-ROM drive wasn't working anymore. He then went outside and had a smoke. :P

I walked out beside him about three minutes later with the open case and a can of compressed air, and showed him the 1/4 inch of smoke crap on every surface of the inside of his computer. I told him I was surprised the thing was still working, and there was no way in HELL we were going to honor the warranty on that thing. Told him I'd sell him a new CD-ROM drive, and that if he wanted the warranty to be honored for the rest of the components, not to ever bring back the computer in that shape.

New I've worked on my Dad's machine before....
and he's a heavy smoker....taught me new meaning for the word disgusting. (I thought my computers were bad with dust...)

There's something about the old electronic wizards and heat and smoke. I guess I could understand it a little - with a soldering iron and smoke from the solder. I just never got into the hardware side that much I guess.
