SCO backlash
Apparently SCO is burning bridges with their decision to sue Linux companies.
Caldera Linux link removed from Linuxiso.org: [link|http://www.linuxiso.org/news.php#79|http://www.linuxiso.org/news.php#79]
Linuxtag says SCO must detail the code theft or retract claims: [link|http://www.linuxtag.org/2003/en/press/releases.xsp?id=3|http://www.linuxtag....releases.xsp?id=3]
Edit:
During my posting the LRPD said this:
IBM is good at two things:
1. Shooting itself in the foot, and 2. Reloading.

Hasn't started yet....He just threatened Linus...
McBride added that unless more companies start licensing SCO's property, he may also sue Linus Torvalds, who is credited with inventing the Linux operating system, for patent infringement.

We REQUIRE MONEY or you are going down <insert 1500 companies> <insert 1500 companies>: <nervously>BWAHAHAHA, that's funny. SCO: We have a NEW Licensee for *OUR* UNIX Patents and Copyrights MICROSOFT: See we knew it all the time, Linux was IP Theft, BAD GNU GPL, Good to support the industry by licenses and licensing, we "made sure our products were in compliance"... NOVELL: HEY, SCO... WTF are Joo DOING? You ain't got NO Patents or Copyrights... We OWNZ EM. SCO: Liar Liar Pants on Fire... We own em. NOVELL: OKAY, show us exactly were in the any public registrar where it says you own them, rather we can show using the government sources regarded as authoritative that we own them. SCO: Nuah, uhhh! Needless to say, we as the Open Source Community are OUTRAGED, but this speed bump is soon to be ground down, all without (even though we give it) our help.

backpedaling again
[link|http://news.com.com/2100-1016_3-1011263.html|SCO: Threat to Torvalds overstated] SCO Group Chief Executive Darl McBride said a published report that his company may take legal action against Linux founder Linus Torvalds was overstated.
Responding to a portion of a Wednesday story by CBS Marketwatch that has generated intense criticism from the Linux community, McBride told CNET News.com that targeting Torvalds is unlikely. ... Torvalds, meanwhile, said he sees legal action against him as ineffectual but not inconceivable. "I don't see what (SCO) would expect to gain from suing me, but they don't seem to be acting very rationally," he wrote in an e-mail interview.

So what?
SCO isn't burning bridges - the bridges have already been blown up by other "interested parties". Whoever Darl McBride offends at this point makes no difference. SCO is dead meat. - Their VARs and Integrators are outraged and heading for the exit.
- Their customers are livid and lining up alternatives.
- IBM is sharpening the blades on its meat grinder and preparing sausage casings.
- Novell has a .44 magnum pointed straight between their eyes and says, "Make my day".
- Red Hat and SuSE are wondering if there will be anything left to sue.
- Linux organizations are gathering resources to support all of the above.
- The future of Unix is Linux, and SCO isn't there. Nobody will buy SCO Linux again whether they reintroduce it or not.
- Microsoft is thinking, "Our work here is done" and will disappear into the woods to avoid being splattered with blood - so messy!
Even Apple couldn't survive decision making this bad.

Re: So what?
Succinctly put, Andrew.
Your analysis has one further implication: Given that all of that was fairly predictable, it suggests that Caldera/SCO has no intention to remain in business. Its 15-month-old initiative to "exploit its intellectual property" -- conjuring up claims against third parties and bolster their stock price -- has become their business.
