New Upgraded Linksys Hub firmware -- now no DSL
For some reason the Linksys hub wouldn't always do PPPoE correctly -- it wouldn't be able to log on, for whatever reason. I'd get around that by hooking the modem directly into my computer via built-in ethernet port, logging in, then hooking it up to the Linksys hub and trying again -- for some reason that worked ok.

I updated the firmware hoping it would work. Now it doesn't work at all. I mean, the wireless part works just fine -- computer can connect to hub just ducky. Hub cannot, alas, log on to net via DSL via PPPoE, at all, not one bit. Grrr.

New !@#$% MAC Addresses
I'm betting the MAC address of the wireless PCMCIA ethernet card that I first used to set up my DSL account is stored in the !@#$% memory of the DSL modem somewhere, and I need to use the Linksys MAC masking feature to copy it. Stupid DSL modem.

New Re: !@#$% MAC Addresses
Mac address is a sure thing for cable around here, but I've never heard of it being used with DSL, but I'm only familiar with ISPs in Southern California.

New It's the only thing I can think of at this point.
Unless the firmware update has somehow damaged Linksys' support of PPPoE. Alas, I can't find any older firmware files, so I can't "backdate" it.

New Read them, but...
They're all dated 2001. I wonder how much the niggling details within DSL modems have changed since then. Maybe not much, maybe a lot. I don't know.
