New Win XP Pro not reading Data CDs
A friend of mine has a weird problem. XP Pro no longer reads data CDs, but can read Audio CDs and play DVDs. I tried to troubleshoot it over the phone, but all he gets is insert a CD into the drive and drive not ready errors when trying to read a data CD. Virus scan shows nothing.

I thought that maybe the CD Filesystem drivers/DLLs got messed up, anybody know what they are called? Also there is a utility that checks file system files and restores them if they are missing or invalid. Anyone remember what it is called?

Thanks.

New well a data cd is a rockridge 9xxx file system
now if it recording or a video it is a different file system(I think) if his XP somehow lost the ability to read a rockridge file system, that would explain.
thanx,

New Not quite
Rock Ridge is the UNIX CD format; Windows uses ISO9660 with Joliet extensions.

How do you impose liberation?
New No, that doesn't work.
Windows doesn't actually remove anything, the CD-ROM is built in.

I run into Windows CD problems often and have tried a lot of different things, but only one works. If it's not a bad drive, the only fix is to reinstall Windows. You can reinstall over the existing Windows so you don't lose your drivers, settings, registry or start menu.

New Don't know if it's still a problem...
but I have that problem many times with cd-rw disks... Many drives have problems with read/write disks. I understand that the etch is not quite as deep in the media. (?? could have that wrong)

Ask your friend what kind of CD's he's trying to read from...

But take your time, think a lot,
Why, think of everything you've got.
For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.
