My step-mom's cousin was on the 80th floor of the first WTC tower to be hit. It took her 45 minutes to get down the stairs and out of the building. She said her legs were like rubber when she made it out. She was with a New Yorker who took her to her apartment in lower Manhattan, and then took her to the Hoboken ferry where someone let her have their car to drive to Charlottsville and later to Charlotte, N.C.
She was very lucky. And it's good that so many people were able to help each other.
I don't know why, but Cindy Lauper's (and Phil Collins') [link|http://home.t-online.de/home/volker.poehls/true1.htm|"True Colors"] keeps popping into my head. It doesn't exactly fit, but it does remind me that the best nature of the vast majority of people is coming out in this terrible time.
Cheers,
Scott.
