Possibly
I'll try a full path.
Also, per Mr. Tilly below, I'll try to see if any error flags get set on the open() call.
I feel like such a schmuck asking this kind of question, too, but in real life I just don't use C++ that much. There are so many other easier, more useful languages around that I don't bother with the hairball known as "a bag on the side of C".

The only dumb question is...
You're the teacher.... I feel like such a schmuck asking this kind of question the one you don't ask. Nobody, with the exception of a few here within IWETHEY ;-b, knows everything.
I know I've asked some "dumb" questions, but if I can't ask them here, where else can I go, knowing that I won't be treated as a fool.
Nobody's a schmuck. Well, as least YOU'RE not a schmuck. ;-b

Thanks
A good reminder....
At this point, it looks like the open() call is erroring out. Now to find out what error flag is being set.

I'd second the permissions...
Don't do C++, but I have experienced similiar problems using Paradox on a Linux file server. If I try to create a directory and file, it'll error. If the parent directory has restrictive access, then wierd errors occur. I've found it best to create the work directory, with full permissions, and then attempt to create the file.

Played with error bits
With an ofstream object, it works fine so I'm assuming at this point no permissions issue.
One possibility is that I need to specify the file name in the fstream constructor so I'll mess with that a bit.
Gee, not a lot of people using C++ for real work, huh? (Okay, that's just my bitterness speaking.)

C++ for real work
It is my conclusion that the only people using C++ for "real work" are Windows victims (because the whole system is built around it) and the stuff I'm seeing at Aerospace/Defense (which is all Unix based but still uses C++). The device driver people are still mostly using C as far as I can tell.
Everybody else seems to have moved to C+- (better known as Java).
If it makes you feel any better - I have similar IO issues in Squeak wrt different pathing behavior and permissions on different platforms.

well several softswitches and other software (added link)
all Sun based use c++ and g++ code to run their stuff. My last gig was at TSI [link|http://www.tsiconnections.com|http://www.tsiconnections.com] a lot of their products are c++ based. The following link was to my baby(sniff) the Terabridge software was all c++. [link|http://www.onforum.com/exhibits/terabridge_01/|http://www.onforum.c...ts/terabridge_01/] thanx, bill

Yeah - OS level code I think
but no applications (where application is defined as a program that a human users interacts with directly).
I know Apple's elliptical encryption routines are written in C++ using some tricky types and operators (stack based "types" - not heap based "objects").
I used to teach the C++ class at University of Colorado, Denver. I'd tell the students on the first day that C++ was a ridiculously complex language with a terrible design - but since you can make money with it, it might be worth learning anyhow.
At the end of the class, the students generally agree'd with me.

CORBA == Objects, so makes sense
But... C++ instead of Java?
For performance reasons, I assume.

Someone somewhere must be using it
Since it's still being taught as a first programming language.
Of course, the Windows developers are being pushed to C#.
I think KDE apps are coded in C++, though.
