New George W. Bush: Syrial killer?
Hawks in and close to the Bush White House have prepared the ground for an attack on Syria, raising the spectre of Hizbollah, of alleged Syrian plans to welcome refugees from Saddam Hussein's fallen regime, and of what the administration insists is Syrian support for Iraq during the war.

Deputy Defence Secretary Paul Wolfowitz - regarded as the real architect of the Iraqi war and its aftermath - said on Thursday that 'the Syrians have been shipping killers into Iraq to try and kill Americans', adding: 'We need to think about what our policy is towards a country that harbours terrorists or harbours war criminals.

'There will have to be change in Syria, plainly,' said Wolfowitz.

Washingtom intelligence sources claim that weapons of mass destruction that Saddam was alleged to have possessed were shipped to Syria after inspectors were sent by the United Nations to find them.

One of the chief ideologists behind the war, Richard Perle, yesterday warned that the US would be compelled to act against Syria if it emerged that weapons of mass destruction had been moved there by Saddam's fallen Iraqi regime.

Nothing new here, really, but the orchestra continues to tune for the next movement of its Symphonie de la Mort et du Sable, with Richard Perle (affectionately known as the "Prince of Darkness" for his many infamies during the Reagan administration) again manning the kettledrum. Note, please, the very deft prepositioning of those elusive Weapons of Mass Destruction: I thought our cabal would be content with "managing expectations," and simply deny that WMDs had ever been an element in our decision to invade liberate Iraq. Instead, with an admirable sense of economy, the regime appears to be preparing to recycle (an infallible sign of personal vrtue, according to the Veep) the casus belli, reasoning that, the imaginary stockpiles of nerve gas having served their purpose in Baghdad, they might just as well be moved next, with no more effort than a few keystrokes of a speechwriter's word processor, to sundry cellars and warehouses in Damascus, the transfer at once explaining away the failure to find them in Iraq and serving as the handiest of pretexts for moving nextdoor come the autumn. There is to such nakedly manipulative dishonesty a kind of Goebbelian grandeur, don't you think?

New What I noticed is the neat line aimed at moderates
The move is part of Washington's efforts to persuade Israel to support a new peace settlement with the Palestinians. Washington has promised Israel that it will take 'all effective action' to cut off Syria's support for Hizbollah - implying a military strike if necessary, sources in the Bush administration have told The Observer .

Very neat line for getting left leaning moderates and pro-war liberals on board, people that are not likely to fall for the 'which cup are the WMDs under' trick. The argument is real thin, since the connection between Hizbollah and the current uprising is slim. But it will play well enough among the left to keep some on the pro-war side.

New Very interesting thread.

I had my money on Iran being next (but maybe they: saw absorbed, stopped).

I can see the rumblings re Syria, but if US were to invade there next, then this becomes a whole new ball-game. Shades of a past 'great plan'.

Cheers

Doug

New No reason to hit Iran
Due to it's history in the US, Iran makes a good bogey man. The reality is that there is no good reason to hit Iran. Iran wasn't even an issue till it ended up on the Axis of Evil list. And I suspect it was put on that list as much for speech writing as anything else.

For a speech, you don't want to get into a long list of countries. But to make an 'axis' you need more then two, so they needed three countries to list. Iraq was obviously the first, and North Korea fit nicely and had recently been in the news. But they needed a third, and Syria would not be a good choice for fear of driving Iraq and Syria into a mutual defense agreement. Other countries, such as Yemen, that might have gotten the third slot where working with the US in the war on terror and thus skipped for the moment.

In any case, there are several good reasons not to invade Iran. First, despite recent rumblings, the government of Iran is much more popular then the government of Iraq ever was. The whole war of liberation thing just isn't going to wash against Iran.

It would have to be presented as a war for our protection. But there is even less reason to consider Iran a threat then Iraq ever was. They are not real big into the WMD thing and it's been a long time since they have tried to export their religion into the west.

Also, any such war would also be complicated by the defensive ties between Iran and Pakistan. Great precutions would have to be taken to keep Pakistan and India from getting involved.

New And the beat goes on
President Bush said Sunday, "We believe there are chemical weapons in Syria" and that the Iraqi neighbor "needs to cooperate" with the United States and its coalition partners.

Bush, in brief remarks Sunday, said Syria should not "harbor" any "Baathists" and military officials "who need to account for their tenure" in Iraq.

But the deputy Syrian ambassador to the United States, Imad Moustapha, speaking on NBC's "Meet the Press," said he believes the reports of chaos and lawlessness in Iraq are embarrassing to the Bush administration and it's pointing fingers at Syria to divert attention from those reports

Asked whether Syria was harboring terrorists or pursuing weapons of mass destruction, he referred to two Washington Times articles citing chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Richard Myers, as saying he's never seen movement of weapons of mass destruction from Iraq to Syria, and that Syria has been cooperating with the CIA in combating terrorism.

"Please help us free this region from all weapons of mass destruction. ... Please inspect every country in the Middle East," Moustapha said. "You know very well that Israel is stockpiling nuclear weapons."

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, also on "Meet the Press," said there's no question that members of Saddam Hussein's regime fled to Syria.

Moustapha said he doesn't think there's a potential for war between the United States and Syria. "We believe in American values and we believe in American fairness," he said.

"believe in American fairness"!!! O, my stars and skies!

Ya know, the players change, but maybe the lesson of Munich--that a predatory empire is never satisfied for very long by appeasement--does have to be learned anew every generation or so. I wonder if it's dawning on the world?

New Continuing Scenario of Unintended Consequences -
In the highly unlikely event that
"Please help us free this region from all weapons of mass destruction. ... Please inspect every country in the Middle East," Moustapha said. "You know very well that Israel is stockpiling nuclear weapons."
this quote were ever to see the drab-Light of News Clowns in the US:

[BushCheney teleprompter + reader-figure] Uhh... Uh... Isruul? Nukular Weapons !? I've never heard that uhh er confirmed, but the enemiesofpeaceandfreedom have hinted at umm such things. Uhh.. ummm.. Uhhhh.. We must um investigate. The very idea that WMDs..WMDs..WMDs..WMDs..WMDs.. Uh.. should be in this area -you know- - it, we must -you know- Make Sure.

[IDF HQ] Well chaps, if they are planning to 'inspect' here, it's Plan I.
Set Aleph thru Tev for Islamabad coordinates - US Embassy ground zero for max. blast effect. Don't forget to mention to the US Ambassador, about the storage sheds around DC and Fucked Steer, TX -- we rented a while back. Suggest to the Ambassador that - inspection shall be accomplished by locals: we'll let you know if we find anything. (If that's not satisfactory, we have an alternate plan you'll have to view on CNN, afterwards.) "BTW, Mr. Ambassador: look up EMP + transistor junctions. Always a pleasure to chat, Mr. Ambassador."

New thump...thump...thump...thump
The United States will examine possible diplomatic or economic measures against Syria, which the United States suspects of developing chemical weapons, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said Monday.

"With respect to Syria, of course we will examine possible measures of a diplomatic, economic or other nature as we move forward," he told reporters after talks with Kuwait Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammad al-Salem al-Sabah.

Ah, now they're not merely accepting Iraqi overstocks, but growing their own. Naughty, naughty! Always a slot for wicked, disobedient little countries in our Axis of Evil(tm).

New Re: "Always a slot for wicked"
The axis of evil is occupied by an unholy trinity of countries of evil doers. Indeed, a slot is opening up.

New Another, more ominous consequence
India making very serious noises about Pakistan. Using US invasion of Iraq as justification for preemptive war.

..sooo reminiscent of bygone BS sessions amongst the nascent Nintendo-Eloi - before there even Was a 'Nintendo', around which to plug-in. Most of those succeeded in growing-up - before attempting to play-out the megalomania.

I hope that (they let) you grow up one day, too. You will then look-back; feel genuine humiliation.. precursor to humility natch- and proceed to grow from a cleaner Petri dish.
